ok yall this may be a silly question but when i put the upgrade of the rear air guard tonight i removed the one way bearing and caught the springs just like everyone says to do. but here is my question... why? when i put the shaft back on and was fighting the spring back in the shaft kept pulling back which makes me question why pull it off in the first place... i instaled the dalton green spring and boy what a pop it gives i want to try and experiment with the weights next

gator, you are correct, it is not necessary to remove the one way bearing to replace the spring. However, I would say its smart to remove and inspect that particular item every time the clutch cover is off since its so important to proper clutch operation. Not to mention the fact that if by mistake or slipup, it comes off without you wanting it to, those springs and plunger are GONE,and you are out 40+ bucks to get new ones if you can't find them, which has happened on several occasions to a few guys. So removing it helps for inspection, and to prevent loss of parts accidentally.

Since its a sealed bearing, I would say inspect it like you would a throwout bearing on a car or truck.. any kind of slop between the moving parts of the bearing. Leakage of the dust seal, any kind of pitting or gauling where the bearing rides on the shaft. That kind stuff.

*shakes head* It's not really a bearing, it is more of just a sleave with very tight tolerances. There are no seals.

Are you sure? I could have sworn the two surfaces of the bearing rotated independant of each other with a very thin rubber shield in between the surfaces.

Have you ever taken yours off? It's metal on metal with a layer of isoflex in between.

yes, I have had mine apart, but the actual bearing is what I am talking about. The bearing itself doesn't require lube, just where it rides on the shaft. Gator was asking how he would know if the bearing itself required replacement.

the one way "bearing" is just a sleave, no rubber, no seals.

The one way bearing is a sleeve with a sealed roller bearing on each end. I removed both of the bearings and removed the inside seals to repack with Amsoil high performance grease ( there is a spring clip that holds the bearings in place.
I then re-installed the bearing seals and placed them back into the one way sleeve.
