Hello all. Been lurking around for some time now and the info here has been priceless. Alot of good reading also. Thanks.
Now for my question. My rear differential is cracking on the left side housing. Not just one crack but cracking all over. Its not leaking any fluid and not making any wierd sounds. Is it safe to ride/normal or do I need to get some warrenty work done. I will try to post a pic as well. Any info will be welcome.
Mine looks like that from day one out of the box. It is not good looking some type of casting problems , But It must has passed QC inspection I would think???
Thanks for the replies. I don't like it but at least now I know it probably won't explode on me. Went riding anyway. Gotta love that warranty. Just hate to do without it for 3 or 4 weeks.
Mine is doing the same..........almost a mirror image of what you posted. Doing the 1st service tomorrow at the dealer and that is one of the things I want to ask them about.
I have seen those casting imperfections on many cast aluminum assemblies over the years many times , you will also find a lot of weird looking imperfections on cast iron as well.Never really did any research on it though.:shrug:Where the heck is Turboman when you need him ??
Those are not cracks in the aluminum but probably cracks in the mold they poured the aluminum into. If you look at them on the showroom floor, you will see the same thing. Might be more apparent after they got dirty though but were probably always there.
If you run your fingernail over the marks, they should actually be raised up very slightly.
I am a design engineer and I have seen many cracks in castings such as this. I would not worry at all about the lines you see on the surface of the casting.
The aluminum primary clutches on my snowmobiles have always had these "cracks" in them in varying degrees. Never had a clutch blow up on me though. I know I'm not scared of them.
