I'm looking at getting a new big bore atv. It will be something that is riden almost everyday except for winter. I need plenty of pulling power, speed is not a big issue. It will be used mostly for work with some mountain trail riding mixed in. I really like the Can-am's, but question their durability. I really would like to be convinced that an outty 800 is the way to go, but a grizz or BF may be a better option. Opinions please.

Well In my trips out the BF's are the least reliable Big Bores. Exploding front diff problems, blown drive belts ( all the time ), tie rods ends blowing off, weird electrical probles in water etc etc. Also if U visit High Lifter and watch the Yamaha site, U will see that the die hard Yamaha guys don't like to release the problems they are having with their 700's, but there are many, including not being to run at all in water, losing all power and the atv shutting off for no reason, front diff problems and so on. Don't rule out the Can-Am OL 800 as reliable, they are very reliable. As for pulling power, U will have excess power on tap in any situation. The engine brake is the most powerful hands down for decending trails in high elevation. The fuel injection is flawless as well. Yer profile name says snowman, but U say U won't be using yer atv in winter? What's up with that? NBM.

I did three desert races this summer, approx. 500 HARD miles as WOT for miles in some places and only problems were a battery strap and FLATS! Mechanically it was flawless and included two "incidents" one which I hit a boulder head on and instead of crashing I(quad under me)launched over it and landed on another boulder...no damage, rolled down a small ravine, no damage(well my groin was pretty sore lol). I'm over 1,000 miles with no problems other then FLATS!

The Service Center I take my 07 800 & 500 Outty Max's to is out in rural Oklahoma near quite a few LARGE dairy farms. The best story I've heard from them so far is that they service all the Can-AM ATV from this one farm that has over 20 Outtys running 7 days a week for about 18 hours a day. Some of the Outtys on that farm have over 20,000 miles on them with only the normal scheduled maintenance done to them. The Rotax engines are very durable and IMO :2cent: put out the most power per CC.

I have 2800 rocky trail miles on mine, no problems, none.
However, that is nothing compared to the post above mine. No more posts need be made to your question. Ifthe abovedoesn't answer your question, then there is no hope for you.

Do you ever go by that dairy farm, or know anyone near there who could go by?
That would make a hell of a magazine article, and Canam should pay you, or somebody, to go by and check that out.

The service guys there have also told me that Can-AM knows about the Outtys with the high miles and wants to send down some of their engineers to go over them because the "farm Outtys" have more mile on them than even their own factory test machines. I have seen some of those Outtys on a few of my visits to the shop and MAN!... they look like they are driven hard.
One more funny story about them is that they (the farm) are always (about every other month) replacing the front bumpers because they get really beat up with all the cow "nudging" they do with them. If I remember right, the shop now makes them custom fab'd heavier duty ones cause the stock ones don't last long enough.
The shop/service center is called Standridge Equipment in Chickasha Oklahoma. Give them a call and hear about it for yourself, 405-224-4411 ask for Brent. They're all GREAT people down there.

Thanks for all the good info guys. I'm just about sold. One question though, I've read lots of things about heat and these machines. Will I have a problem with overheating while pulling 900-1000 lbs around on a 100 degree day? It's sometimes hard to figure things out because most posts don't say whether it's an '06, '07, '08 outty that they are talking about. The 2800 miles of rocky trails and the dairy farm pretty much sealed the deal for me though. And NBM, I do ride in the winter, but not for work. "Snowman" is what my little brothers called me when we were kids and it kind of stuck. Thanks all.:thm:

Most of the overheating problems have occured from mud plugged rads. The 800 is a big engine and requires serious cooling. What historically happens is guys will ride a weekend or two in heavy mud and never clean the rad properly, trust me I am one of those guys. Because the rad is soo thick it requires a little extra time cleaning after each weekend.
I might be assuming here but it appears you're doing more hauling than mud riding so this won't be a major issue.
Past the great story's above the Can-am has a 3 year warranty most ATV's come with 3-6months.Combine that with anamazing ride, huge power etc...the warranty sells it for most guys!
Cheers,
