Change the air filter and spark plug, put in some fresh gas. Maybe that'll help.

Backfire

Are you sure it is backfiring, and not the back pressure from the exhaust....mine will pop every once in a while but it does not backfire...usally in low gear after going fast and letting it roll to a stop.
I would change the plugs if you have not done so, also if it has been sitting for a while add some fuel stabilizer or fuel additives, i like seafoam it works really well also cleans carb. or injectors. I like to run a higher octane fuel like 92 the manuals states a minimum of 87 octane; remember the compression on these machines are 10.1. You can also check your exhaust pipe if it has a spark arrestor or a screen in it make sure it is not clogged.

Try cleaning the carb, check floats, needle and seat and resetting all the specs. (float level, mixture screw, idle rpm) Check for dirt/ clogging of the ports.

If it pops in the exhaust- it is rich. Many muffled pops is a bit rich, a loud pop is way rich

If it pops in the intake - it is lean.

If it does it when you let off the throttle- it is the idle circuit. (carbs work on throttle position not rpm) Check all idle ports for dirt etc. (some carbs have air screw/ behind the carb towards filter or a fuel screw which is in front of carb towards engine.

I have essentially the same machine, an 04 outlander 400 maxx which had the same problem: a loud rifle-shot backfire on deceleration. After a lot of wasted time playing with the pilot jet setting, I found it was due to a crack in the head-pipe right at the flange where it meets the cylinder head. It's hidden under the bracket that secures the pipe to the head so you can't see it without removing the pipe. I replaced the head pipe and the backfire is finally gone.

Pretty much all the answers have been given. Are you riding at your normal elevation? If you are riding at a different elevation, re-jetting may be needed.

Also, I moved this to a more "watched" area, you'll get more views.

07-650-MAX XT
Ricochete ~ Crutchfield 2+1 ~ PRP Stabilizer ~ 25" Bighorn's ~ Kewltek brakes ~ Alumatech Guards
Dalton ~ Fasst bars ~ Cannon/mrrpm oil cooler ~ 10" Rigid LED light-bar + many little "custom" things
Gave to stepson, without a ride for awhile.

I've been having the same problem lately as mnviper. I asked the mechanic if perhaps there was an exhaust leak at the pipe/motor joint, and he said that if there were, you'd hear a hissing sound of the exhaust leaking as the piston moved up and down. They adjusted the carb (it was clean), replaced the spark plug, and checked the valve gap. Still backfires when going down a steep hill or quick deceleration.
