Default Renegade 800 weak charging (swap to '10 stator?)

I have an '08 Renegade 800 X that I bought new. I mostly ride in the winter so I also added the factory Can Am hand and thumb warmers and wired the headlights so when the high beams are on all four headlight will light up.

Now with everything turned on during a ride I am probably using alot of electricity but I always get a LOW BATTERY messange on the console and the hand and thumb warmer have always been pretty weak. Often when I shut the machine down and restart it after a ride like this it will turn over slow.

I read somewhere that the charging systems on these were notoriously weak and I'm sure that the problems I am experiencing are symptoms of this.

I read on the Can Am website that the new Renegades have a more powerful 650 watt magneto. Has anyone switched to the newer magneto or have any other way of fixing the problems I am having ???

The Hi-Lo lights is what is probably doing you in.
The bigger mag won't fit in older bikes.

Next ride I am going to wire it back to the original two headlight setup to see what that does. Unfortunately I mostly only ride at night in the winter so it's great having the extra lighting while the hand warmers are going. I looked up the hand warmers and they are only 20 watts on high but each headlight is 60 watts so the additional headlights are another 120 watts. Not sure what the thumb warmer would add but it can't be much since it is a small heating element.

That sucks the newer mag doesn't fit. I was all ready to go buy it.

Are you sure it won't fit? There are some folks that are saying it will fit with just it and a couple other parts on the "other" forum.

I'm just going by what those in the know on here have said since it came out. I haven't heard otherwise yet. If anything it can be done but you would be out less money buying a new bike.

" If anything it can be done but you would be out less money buying a new bike."

Really?????

Unless you really raped someone selling the 08 and got the steal of the century on the 2010, I doubt that could be true, but I don't know what the stator upgrade is going to cost.

The magnetos in the 10 model will not fit in previous years models. It is 2 large. There are some internal changes for 2010 to allow fitment.
This could mean a different engine block??

I look forward to what gregpro50's dealer has to say. As of right now, I have not heard of anyone pulling it off.

got a link? there are a lot of "other" forums previously it was all speculation about whether they'd fit or not. now that they are out and you can order parts for them, someone probably knows for sure.

Well the dealer called back and says that the magneto is not interchangeable to the older models although he could not tell me why. I asked for a parts schematic to see what the differences are and to see if it was possible to retro fit it.

My old Polaris scrambler never had these problems... At least when the battery went dead with that I could pull start it.
