Bill of sale no title/vin tag

Hey noobie here on the forum, have had quads for a while and this is my first can-am its an outlander 800, well the problem im having right now is i bought it from a guy who said it would not start, drained the gas out and changed everything tune up, and it fires up fine runs great. Well the problem i have is i bought it with only bill of sale he bought it from a guy at a swap meet and he was never able to figure out the starting problem, and only got a bill of sale and there is no vin plate on the bike. Im from ohio and we need to have them registered, does anyone know if there is anything i can do to get some sort of title for the bike?

take it to a dealer and let them hook it up to their computer ... sounds like it might be stolen to me. once yer positive its clear then yer local DMV should be able to help you with the rest

pretty sure I saw a spot on the frame right under the front differential (right hand side as you sit on the machine) that had the vin stamped in mine.... give it a look see....

There is one on the engine too, up front, almost viewable from left side, meaning it's very hard to find and then actually read it.

No title = Minor concern as lots of states do not require a title on ATV's

No VIN = Major concern. Almost certainly stolen, especially considering the 'owner trail' story that you got (even assuming that they told you the truth). Keep in mind that if you follow this to the point that someone in law enforcement confirms that it's stolen that you will loose the bike. It will either go back to it's rightful owner or to whatever insurance paid out on it.

Edit to add: Since you have to register in Ohio then if the bike is stolen this is almost certain to come out. You can get a replacement title, but to do so requires a VIN trace of the vehicle. If the original owner reported it stolen (likely) or if the insurance company registered the VIN as stolen (a certainty) then any attempt at getting a replacement title will show this as a stolen bike. Only if the theft was not reported or there is some glitch in tracing the VIN will this go unnoticed. Beyond that, if you cannot find the VIN on the ATV then you'll never get a title. Since a missing or altered VIN almost always indicates theft, no state will issue a replacement title under those circumstances.

I hate to say it but I think you are screwed.

Both of my sticker-vins are gone due to getting killed with my pressure washer. So i'd think positively until you find out for sure.
