It feels like it could flatline just any day, and I am quite a bit aprehensive to go riding fearing being left alone and deserted.
I have a 1999 Honda Fourtrax 300 (2wd). When riding at slower speeds in a higher gear I feel the front and rear ends shimmying to no end... Example: When in 5th gear and 10 or so mph while turning tight, I get shimmys from what seems like the rear axle and somewhere low and in the front portion of the engine...
Also, when messing around with the clutch, letting it in and out, I hear occasional grinding from the front lower portion of the engine. Also felt when slowing down in higher gears. (Mostly 4th and 5th, but sometimes 3rd...)
Please Help me, this is my first and only machine for now, and I love riding...
when riding slower speeds try using lower gears and see if it still does it. 10mph sounds WAY too slow for 4th or 5th gearif yer honda ATV is anything like their motorcycles
First of all, I never push hard in the higher gears and slow speeds. I just like to keep a bit quiet on the higher rpm noise when just lolligagging around on smooth flat stuff.
Maybe I am bringing this upon myself by driving the way I do.
When doing some low-mid rpm riding there are different levels of engine knocking and what sounds like valve clicking happening quite often.
Also, I still get some tranny grinding when slowing, and also, when disengaging the clutch, can hear some loose knocking or light thuds that go quicker or slower with quicker or slower speeds...
I did wind it out pretty good today though. Sounds almost like a tin can and full rpm being shot into shrapnel through a jet turbine...
yer prolly gonna have to take it to a shop and have em tell you how much to fix it. If its making all them noises, I dont recomend you doin any more of the high RPM stuff or even riding it for that matter till you know whats wrong with it. it would suck to do more damage to a minor problem.
Ithink OSO's right, from what you described,at least part of your problem sounds like rod knock, not good, take it in and have it looked at. Unless you just want to shoot it.Just kidding,I dont like mechanicle problems either. good luck.
Big thanks to all of you for your help. I posted this same message at 2 other unmentionable forums and still have gotten no reply's. I am too busy trying to get my first job right now to fiddle with the wheeler tomorrow, but maybe Thursday or Friday. (VERY important if I ever want to get a Bombardier / Can-Am Outlander 650 soon. Or pay for gas just to drive!)....
NE Wayz, thanks soo much for the help. I also thought it sounded like the rockers knocking around, as I've heard that exact sound before in an old car...
Also, I was wondering if the gears have been grinded too much, will I find metal shavings in my oil? Might check that tomorrow....

[edit]: btw, the wheeler is technically my Dads, tho I ride it more, and if I break it... its my ass. LOL! :ban:od::ban:
