Hello, Ihave been browsing through some of the discussions and it seems like ther is some knowledge floating around. I have an interesting problem,my 2000 sportsmann 500 will not start. I let my brother borrow it ( I know first big mistake since he knows as much as my beagle about motors) and the starter went out while he was using it so when he brought it back I through a new starter in it and since then I can't get it to take of it spins over and if you spray carb cleaner in the carb in will increase and act like it wants to go but just won't. I have tore the carb down and put in a jet kit with a K&N filter and a new needle and seat since it was wore. also through in new battery, checked valve clearence, the cam appears to be good but the decompresion lever does show wear with a gouge in it. compresion is 45 - 50 which is on the low side of the manual tolerance. I am open to any and all suggestions. looking forward to helping any I can.

Thanks for looking

Have you tried the simple things?

Verified spark at the plug?

Verified air and gas at the carb?

I'm assuming you have spark, air, and gas from the other things you checked.

thank you for the reply, and yes I have verified the simple things. Last night I did tear the rocker arm off and evertything looks to be fine even the cam doesnt show any real wear? My thought was maybe the decompression valve was stuck but that appeared to be ok. I am starting to wonder if the stator might be the issue because the seal on the old starter was shot and the fly wheelis rusty, I don't know and I am assuming but is it possible that it might bebad and not firing correctly because that is what it kinda acts like. with the plug out it will jump about a 1/2" gap if you hold it away from the frame.I am clue less to the exacts of the working of the stator. any possible suggetions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again for any help

If you have a manual I suggest you verify that it is firing when it is supposed to. Prolly need a timing light to do this. also was any wires left off the starter when it was installed? I doubt it is the stator with the spark jumping 1/2in more like it is outta time or maybe the timing chain has takin a jump

I'm with OSOKILL on this one. If you are getting good fuel/air mix and good spark it's gotta be timing.

HI guys thanks for replying, I did this mourning put the timing light to it and it is firing between the tdc mark and the advance marks. compression actually reads 70 when I pull it over by hand? and 40 with the starter. I am stating to think that ther might be some sort of blockage in the carb? please keep thunking and I will keep diognosing so hopefully if any body else runs onto this I can be a big help to them. Thanks again

MERRY CHRISTMAS

can you get it to start by pulling it over by hand?

Put yer hand over the end of the carb and crank it if it sucks yer hand to it no blockage if you dont feel any suction at all then TADA no gas getting to it and find out why

Have't tried to start it by hand yet but I will give that a try, and if I put my hand over the carb it does have good suction and will pull gas into your hand and flood that area so it appears plenty of fuel? think I might pull head off if it doesn't start by hand just to see and make sure nothing goofy there.
