I do all my own work on everything I own with a motor! Lol my dealer isn't to bad to deal with but I've always did all my own work simply because I think I take alot more care with installing parts or even doin a service. I've seen dealers do quality work not bashing them by no means but over the years of being a mechanic I save alot of money by doing it myself and is also really rewarding. I do get my parts there but that is the extent of my visits to they dealer.

I love my dealer and have been buying from them exclusively for nearly 20 yrs. BUT, I do my own oil chages & maintenance myself. I do buy all of my oem parts from them.

I have the dealer do maintenance according to the schedule in the manual. Any additional fluid changes or something I want done that won't cause any warranty hiccups I do myself. For instance, there was no way I was waiting 'til the manual said a gearbox or differential fluid change was required.

As far as OEM parts I have gotten them from the dealer but I believe I have bought my last OEM part, replacement or otherwise. There are so many good aftermarket choices that are cheaper.

I used to take my bike to the dealers every day
I was the service manager there
Riding a Honda to Suzuki/Yamaha dealership wasn't actually considered odd.
Naturally enough, I do all my own work, even though I haven't worked in a dealership since 1995

I only bought the bike there because I can't purchase it directly myself. Then to top it off their prices are insane and it's not because they always know what they're doing. It's because the insurance prices is more costly because they sell new bikes there, so to make up for it they sky rocket the prices, and I know dealers that are known for not doing the work they're paid to do, or not doing it right. Then last but not least they're mechanics aren't always good and people think the word "dealer" is associated with the best possible quality of work.

In general, the main problem is owners/manager are often greedy and also treat workshops as a necessary evil that loose's money. They won't pay to get good people or lie about flat rate, etc so only get what they pay for
I have gone into several dealerships to make the workshops profitable without ripping off customers.
I've found sales is always a problem, salesmen often have no concern other than commission, particulaly when taking a trade.
Workshop is then expected to make a POS perfect for next to nothing, otherwise it shows as a loss for workshop
As soon as the real culprit is found and work booked to them, the trade prices get more realistic and sales can end up loosing money (or at least certain 'top' sales people)
If you find a good shop with good people, support it. It should be possible to talk with the mechanic fixing your bike or ATV, (be aware though, techs can be good but not have 'people skills) if manager or foreman makes excuses to prevent you talking to techs, they usually have something to hide.I always taught 'my' techs to write everything they did on RO, if doing a valve adjust, put down original clearance then what it was actually set to (not just write 'set to spec' that means nothing)
The other thing that always really annoys me is bumping the price with 'shop supplies'
Personally I feel it's dishonest and always gave actual price for service.
Usually it was slightly higher than other shops, but there were never any surprises and 'we' ended up booking bikes months in advance. Doing a better than expected job for a fair price is always good for business
Sorry it's such a long post,

my dealer is pretty good and they do not care what modifications you make the service manager said that if it is what causes the bike to break then that won't be covered under warranty but say if you put a snorkel kit on it and something happened completely unrelated to it it would be covered under warranty
