Why Is My ATV So Difficult To Start

ATV AnswerMan looks into a problem Honda Rancher 400

When my Honda Rancher 400 sits for a day or more, gas drains back to the tank making it a five-minute crank to start. What can I do to fix this?

Joe Howard

Hi Joe,

Well there is one thing that is for certain, the gas is not draining back into the tank. The tank on your TRX400FM sits well above the carburetor (right between your legs under the handlebars) and cannot return once it leaves via the petcock. There are several things that can be causing the slow start, though, so letís look at a few options to try and figure out your issue. Since you did not list the year I have to guess itís at least a 1995 to 2007 variant of the Rancher, as these were the years a 400cc engine was built for the Rancher models.

One of the reasons a carbureted engine is a little tough to start sometimes is the compression of the engine is too low to draw ample fuel into the cylinder to burn. If the rings, piston or cylinder are not working properly, not enough suction or compression is produced to pull the fuel in. Do a compression test to determine if the engine is within spec according to Hondaís service manual.

Another problem you might encounter are the valves not being set in the correct tolerances or being worn past service limits, causing what are essentially timing issues. Shimming or adjusting the valves needs to be performed by a service tech or experienced mechanic, as you can cause more damage by not getting this service done correctly the first time.

These are all real issues that a trusty old ATV will encounter sooner or later and if you do not service the engine properly in the timely intervals required by the manufacturer, then you will see it sooner rather than later. Look at these items carefully and I think you will find that you need to give this TRX400F a few hugs and kisses to get back into the trail.

From the Octagon to ATVs + Video

ATV riding is a great way to unwind after a long week of working. But when you have one of the most physically taxing and intense jobs in the world, that time spent enjoying the trails can mean even more.

Miesha Tate, former UFC womenís bantamweight champion, and Bryan Caraway, UFC menís bantamweight contender, were able to escape the grind of a fighterís life this summer with a powersports vacation in Ontario, Canada. The trip came just three weeks after Tate lost her UFC championship and gave her a chance to recharge.

'I live a very busy lifestyle Ė I live in Las Vegas and Iím constantly around people. So when I want to escape somewhere, I really want to escape,' says Tate. 'Coming up to Ontario, itís something Iíd wanted to do for some time because Iíve always heard how beautiful it was up here and how amazing and surreal it is.'

5 Things to Watch for When Buying a Used ATV
Aug 23, 2016 - 9:59 AM - by ATV.com

Buying used is one of the best ways to get a good deal on a vehicle, especially an ATV. However, you can't be too careful. Here are some tips from our staff of experienced ATV buyers that can help you sort the peaches from the lemons.

You'll want to give the ATV's motor and electronics a thorough looking-over. Start with the engine oil -- visually inspect it for moisture, particles, and other things that shouldn't be there, and make sure that the color isn't too dark. You'll also want to get your nose in on the act by smelling the dipstick, to confirm that the oil doesn't give off a burnt odor.

Next, check the coolant -- you're looking for particles of oil in it. If you find them, it's a red flag.

Finally, confirm that all of the electronics -- headlights, tail lights, key switch, and engine shutoff -- are in working order.
