2011 1000XT Lunging/Surging on deceleration

Hello everyone. New to the forum. Been on the web for some time now trying to find a similar situation to mine. Here it goes. When decelerating whether in high or low, I get surging or lunging. This is only on deceleration or when slightly letting off the throttle. It happens on a a flat road as well as down a hill. One way bearing has been rebuilt. Primary has been rebuilt. New belt. Fresh Dalton clutch kit installed. Fresh fluid service on gearbox, diffs and engine. Secondary was pulled apart and all tolerances were within spec of the service manual. I haven't had this machine very long. There is evidence on the inside of the clutch cover that the secondary has come loose at some point as there are some groove marks from the bolt and outer half rubbing the cover. Any suggestions? I'll try and take a video of what I'm experiencing, bit maybe there are some folks with a similar situation that can chime in.

Welcome to the site

So is the drivetrain/engine brake, staying engaged, and the engine rpms momentarily jump up? Or is the belt slipping, and the rpms's stay constant, while the bike free-wheels? Any clackety ratchet noise from the helix skipping?

Thanks for the reply.

The belt doesn't seem to be slipping because i end up hugging the steering wheel off and on when it happens. The RPMs do jump up and down, but not because i have my foot in the throttle. It's lurking while slowing down, and rapidly, so I'm sure the engine brake is doing what its supposed to. Its like the clutching is engaging and disengaging on a cycle. I jacked up the rear and ran it in gear with the CVT cover off to see if i could recreate the issue. I doesnt do it as bad on the jack, it's definitely worse under load while driving. But while jacked up and in gear in the higher RPMs when i let off throttle i can see the belt moving up and down on the secondary. To me it seems like the secondary is pooched. Maybe the helix? When I had the secondary off and apart the helix looked fine. No ratcheting from the helix skipping.

Oh! Commander 🤦‍♂️ totally didn't even notice that at first

Any error codes with that pedal position sensor? I recall some of those early commanders had issues with the pedal, could give you that problem you're experiencing

Helix is really a visual kinda pass/fail, not much to it. If it looks good, it's probably good. Maybe the secondary spring?

Secondary spring is brand new as per the Dalton Clutch kit. Buddy has an identical commander. Im going to steal his secondary for a test run and see. In the meantime I will investigate pedal position sensor. If the pedal position sensor is shot would it throw a code or not necessarily?

Thanks

It should, yeah, but you'd also more than likely get random drivability gremlins all over the place, not just decel. I think I talked myself into and then right back out of, telling you to chase it :p

You're right to suspect something with the secondary, tho. That clutch is the one predominantly involved with decel behaviors. Any flat spots on the sheave faces?

Haha no worries. Good learning experience here. The more I read up on the PPS I dont think thats the case. Sheaves were in nice shape. No knicks or scratches. They cleaned up nicely. Im suspecting something is tweaked in the secondary given the evidence of it coming off at one point.

Even if i maintain a very steady speed, the moment it starts to slow down it starts lunging. If I maintain the smallest load on the unit just driving it goes away.

Well it's good that you have a buddy willing to lend you parts. Better still that there are plenty of take-off clutches kicking around out there, for all the guys that have gone full QSC/STM/etc, oughta be able to find you a good secondary for not much coin, if that turns out to be the problem.

Howdy, I have had an ongoing issue with my 2014 100 Commander XT. After it is hot and going downhill at about 4000 RPM with foot lightly on gas or completely off the engine surges about 500 RPM. This doesn't seem to happen when cold. I have replaced the MAF, speed sensor, plugs, one-way bearing, belt, had fuel tank cleaned and sealed finally replaced the throttle Body no change, I have a Video but can't post it (MPEG4). No Codes on Candopro. the Video is on commanderforums.org under General Commander Discussion Strange Problem
