The Can-Am Renegade 800R returns to the lineup and is completely new from the ground up for 2012. The machine’s unique blend of sport and utility trail manners along with its superb power-to-weight ratio and acceleration make it a most impressive 4x4 ATV.
Using Computer-aided Vehicle Dynamics (CAVD) software, Can-Am engineers took an innovative approach to all aspects of the chassis of this new-generation Renegade ATV. The goal, bring the knowledge of new-wave geometries gained through years of testing that would challenge traditional thinking in the off-road world. The results are principles of design we call Geometric Contact Control. This allows the chassis of the next-generation Renegade to perform at the top of the sport 4x4 world, yet enhance the overall comfort of the vehicle at all levels of riding.
The Rotax 800R engine is also available in the popular Can-Am Renegade 800R X xc package. This performance package was developed using our vast racing experience in the Grand National Cross Country (GNCC) racing series. CAN-AM RENEGADE 800R ATV FAMILY FEATURES AND BENEFITS
ROTAX V-TWIN 800R
The 80o Rotax V-twin engine powering the Outlander 800R continues its market dominance and maintains its legendary Can-Am performance levels, including 71 horsepower that helped build its reputation. The 799cc mill is a true bully with the power and torque to edge competitive machines with larger displacement levels*. The power plant has four valves per cylinder and is fed by a 46mm throttle body and twin VDO Siemens fuel injectors for precision throttle control in every situation.
The larger, more efficient radiator offers almost double the cooling capacity than its predecessor and keeps the engine running cool for optimal performance. The radiator capacity grew by 14 kW with the engineering updates.
REDESIGNED AIR BOX
The Renegade 800R air box design was reconfigured and placed at a higher and more centralized location for filtering and processing air. The no-tools air box features a dual-room design that improves the air filtration process and the quality of air by capturing dirty air in one portion of the box and clean air in another section before it sends the air to the engine. Along with the relocated air box the air intake is also higher in the frame to improve the machine’s capabilities in the mud and water. Accessing the filter for maintenance and inspection only requires the removal of the seat, console plastic and exterior push plate. The air filter is securely attached to the air box housing with a new screw-on system and push plate that work in tandem to create a tight seal.
EASY ACCESS FOR MAINTENANCE
Can-Am engineers produced a more maintenance-friendly setup on the new Renegade. The battery was relocated beneath the seat to offer easier access and improved protection. The rear brake fluid reservoir, solenoid starter and relays were also placed conveniently under the seat.
CVT TRANSMISSION AND NEW COVER
The CVT system was updated to improve the transmission performance in wet terrain and conditions. The cover now features a more secure 13-bolt system for an improved seal. A dedicated drain plug is built into the cover and easily accessible if the need ever arises to remove water from the CVT housing. The CVT intake was repositioned to a higher location in the chassis for optimal performance in wet riding conditions. Automatic transmission with standard engine braking featuring high, low, park, neutral and reverse is also included.
SURROUNDING SPAR TECHNOLOGY (SST) G2 FRAME
The Renegade 800R uses the next generation and industry-exclusive Surrounding Spar Technology (SST) chassis from Can-Am. The new welded-steel SST frame incorporates new processes and updated geometry for increased structural integrity, improved durability and precision handling. The SST design offers also increases strength, provides a lower center of gravity, improves handling and requires far less components, materials and welds than a traditional tube frame. For 2012, the G2 chassis has fewer parts, but is more durable and offers increased torsional stiffness to more properly meets the high expectations of the end user for both work and play.
VISCO-LOK FRONT DIFFERENTIAL
The progressive auto-locking Visco-Lok front differential is unique to the ATV industry. The innovative system constantly monitors front wheel speed and, if it detects one wheel spinning more quickly than the other, it progressively sends additional power to the wheel with better traction. Wheel hop or driveline wind-up is also eliminated to keep the system transparent to the operator. It’s also 100 percent locking, which means no need for either a rev or speed limiter. Visco-Lok QE (Quicker Engaging) is available on the Renegade X xc.
REDESIGNED DOUBLE A-ARM FRONT SUSPENSION WITH DIVE-CONTROL GEOMETRY
The Renegade retains its race-tested double A-arm setup, but its suspension travel increased for 2012. The 2012 model uses five-way preload HPG shocks that offer more than an inch of additional suspension travel for both trail comfort and aggressive riding situations. Front-end suspension travel is 9 inches (22.8 cm). The setup also inspires confidence, reduc- ing kickback to the operator by locating the knuckle in the wheel.
REDESIGNED TRAILING TORSIONAL INDEPENDENT (TTI) REAR SUSPENSION
The TTI, which offers 75 percent less moving parts than competitive systems, was designed to eliminate scrub and camber changes when the suspension moves up and down and keep the quad in straight line. Unique to Can-Am, the proven Torsional Trailering arm Independent (TTI) rear suspension has been reconfigured to offer increased rigidity and improved suspension travel at 9.3 inches (23.6 cm). This suspension setup also includes a removable external sway bar and lower pivot points for geometric squatting to improve traction and the transferring of power to the ground.
FOX RACING SHOX HPG SHOCKS
The standard Renegade 800R wears preload-adjustable high-pressure gas (HPG) shocks, front and rear, with a specific calibration to soak up both high- and low-speed bumps and keep the ride smooth.
12-INCH (30.5CM) CAST-ALUMINUM WHEELS
Can-Am designers equipped the revamped Renegade base model with innovative computer-optimized wheels that are a first for an ATV manufacturer. A center-less wheel design reduces unsprung weight but offers improved strength. Durability increased in strategic areas while excess material was eliminated in other areas to save weight.

214MM HYDRAULIC DISC BRAKES
The front setup uses two large 214mm disc brakes with twin-piston calipers for superior stopping power. At the rear, the models use two, twin-piston caliper and 214mm hydraulic disc brakes. The system also includes separate front and rear hand brake levers for optimal control.
For improved nighttime clarity and visibility on the trail, the Renegade 800R comes with 240 watts (4 x 60 w) of lighting power for the most in the industry. Four projector-type headlights bring unequaled styling and performance to the Renegade. The taillights offer a new stylish design that blends in with the rear plastic and offers increased visibility for trail riding.

The larger fuel tanks holds 5.4 gallons (20.5 litres) of gas, so you can enjoy more seat time and explore more trails.
MINOR VISUAL UPDATES
The Renegade 800R features a slightly different appearance without losing its highly recognizable and attractive looks. The radiator cover, taillights and wheels were all redesigned to offer a better look and improved performance.
DIGITALLY ENCODED SECURITY SYSTEM (D.E.S.S.)
D.E.S.S. is the ATV industry’s lone factory-installed anti-theft device. The system utilizes electronic key codes that are required to match each specific ATV’s ECM. The machine will not start unless the coded microchip in the key matches the code pre-installed in the engine control module. Two keys are included with each model. The performance key allows the ATV to operate at maximum performance. The Normal key limits acceleration and top speed.
2012 CAN-AM RENEGADE 800R X XC
Building on the success and experience of the Can-Am GNCC racing program, BRP engineers picked the brains of the top 4x4 woods racers in the world to develop the Renegade 800R X xc. Along with all the updated features, benefits and performance levels of the base Renegade 800R, the X xc also gets added components, making it stand out even more. It is also the only sport-oriented ATV with power steering available on the market.
TRI-MODE DYNAMIC POWER STEERING (DPS)
Calibrated specifically for aggressive trail riding and racing, the 800R X xc Tri-mode DPS system features three modes (MIN, MED and MAX) lets riders select the desired amount of steering assist for the terrain and conditions. DPS offers variable steering assistance no matter what mode is selected. The system is designed to offer less assist at high speed and more assist at low speed. This technology also includes a Direct Link setup that uses advanced magnetic field sensors for faster response to steering input than competitive technology, which then minimizes steering lag. Less kickback and more trail feedback is supplied to the operator because of the 50:1 final gear ratio, which is the largest in the industry. A high-capacity 50-amp motor means the DPS will never fade with heavy use and all DPS-equipped models also come with the Visco-Lok QE.
VISCO-LOK QE FRONT DIFFERENTIAL
All DPS-equipped models come with the Visco-Lok QE calibration giving an even quicker engagement of the front differ- ential. It progressively transfers power from a slipping front wheel to the gripping one – automatically with no buttons to push or levers to pull. Plus, there’s no wheel hop or driveline wind-up so the system is totally transparent to the driver and extremely easy to steer. Can lock up to 100 percent with no rev or speed limiter. This differential, unlike some competitor’s differentials, does not have a speed or rev limiter.
FOX RACING SHOX PODIUM X SUSPENSION
Up front, the Renegade 800R X xc features FOX Racing Shox Podium X piggyback shocks with high- and low-speed compression adjustability, rebound and preload adjustment. Front travel is 9 inches (22.8 cm). The rear also features FOX Podium X piggyback shocks and high- and low-speed compression adjustment, rebound and preload adjustability. Rear suspension travel is 9.3 inches (22.6 cm).
12-INCH (30.5CM) ALUMINUM BEADLOCK WHEELS
The new cast-aluminum wheels include beadlocks on the X xc. This Can-Am-exclusive design clamps the tire bead securely to the Renegade 800R X xc wheel for added performance under heavy acceleration and cornering. GNCC racing feedback helped produced this exact setup.
RENEGADE X XC-SPECIFIC GRAPHICS
BRP outfits the Can-Am Renegade 800R X xc with a wild, black-and-yellow graphics package that looks like it belongs on the racetrack. Add in the premium, embroidered gripper seat cover and it truly looks ready to race.
