2014 Commander 1000 Question

Hi all, this is my first time posting so please bear with me. I bought a used 14 Can Am Commander XT-P 1000 and decided to change the rear differential fluid. The Allen head of the drain plug was stripped when I first saw it, so after many tries, I used a screw extractor to pull it out. No problem there. The problem began once I tried to install the new OEM replacement. The new one is 10mm wide while the old is 9mm. I cannot find a replacement plug that will fit. Any help would be appreciated. I am thinking about using a die set to slim down the new one to fit. Or conversely, a tap to enlarge the current drain opening.

Welcome to the site, Tony

What part number are you using/looking for?

Well, that should be the right one, then.

I suppose it's always possible it was mis-picked/mis-bagged, prior to shipment. I'm dealing with that right now at work. Have you tried ordering another one in?

So went to dealer and they tried to match. Nothing there that would match size and thread pitch (great idea by the way). Ran into a retired machinist who said he could silver solder an Allen wrench to the head of the old one( threads are good) I asked for it to be about 1.5 inches long so I could get a socket on it. He is making the piece now. Hope this works.

Interesting... glad you seem to have a resolution on the horizon, but sure curious as to why this has been such a chore thus far.

Anyway, back to riding!

Installed the old plug with the extension welded onto it. I used a little anti-seize on the threads and it went right in. Installed the skid plate and it gives me about 3/4 of an inch of clearance between the skid plate and bottom of extension. Now to put in the new gear oil.
