2015 Commander Resurrection

BombardierBomb and I were talking and we figured everyone likes a good build/resurrection thread. So here is mine:
Price was too right on this 2015 Commander 800r DPS to say no. Curious what people think it would be worth. Don't worry about insulting. I'm asking for it lol
I absolutely hate it when people treat equipment like this. It was left out without a cover for a couple of years. New $300 Can Am cover was in the bed. Just never put on.
A few years ago someone dumped a ton of money into it. $500 Wet Sounds sound bar, $700 Rigid lights, $2,800 SATV 6" suspension, 36" tires, wheels, snorkels etc. Crazy money 🤑 Now it's my turn lol
Clutch was smoked when I bought it. I think it had been left with water in the cover by the looks of the primary and secondary. I think the primary would have been fine if it wasn't left out with the variator cover off. It's salvageable, but I asked myself why dump money into a stock clutch? All that initially happened was the secondary spring grenaded. That side lined it until me. She needs some TLC, but it has less than 100 hrs and is in otherwise perfect mechanical condition. A little elbow grease and I think she'll be good to go.
So far, I ordered a new STM primary and secondary and a BUDS set up. I also ordered a bunch of odds and ends like a new variator cover.
I have some cleaning to do, but I think she's a nice addition to the stable.
The first pic is current, then the pics go from when I picked it up until now.

Love it

So when did the roof make its appearance?

Methinks it's a good sign the PO left the exhaust alone, he wasn't into ripping and "BRAPP-ing"

Love that front bumper, curious as to the winch choice, tho. 2500lb is barely adequate for most SxS applications.

PO replaced my Mav cluster with the dual analog style, so much nicer than the little rectangle. I found an XRS steering wheel on eBay to replace my base one, it'd be the same as say a Limited Commander, that was a really cheap nice upgrade for the driving experience.

The roof was a nice surprise. He found it in the barn before I left. I need to bolt it on though. All the mounts are there already.
I found a NOS BRP steering wheel for $40 delivered so I just went with that to replace the worn one that's on it.
I like the cluster idea. If I find one for reasonable money and looks good I'll probably grab it. I'll have BUDS so that makes it easy from what I've seen.
Love the bumper too. The winch is on my short list. Joke of a Harbor Freight deal. Broken anyway. I think have a decent 3,500 out in my barn for now, but I'll be looking for something larger.

Installed my new STM Primary and Secondary today. Man what a work of art. It seems to be working well so far, but it seems a little loud with the covers off. I'm not sure if that's normal for these.
Took it for a light rip around to break in the clutch and new belt. What a machine. Love it.
New gauge cluster should be here this week. Pretty much everything else I'm working on for now is cosmetics thankfully. It's running awesome.
Video of the clutch. Thoughts? Maybe just not broken in yet.

I think normal but not much experience with stm.

I would get rid of that gates belt and go with a Maverick belt though. Sweet machine by the way.

Thanks. I think it started quieting down after running it for a while. Just might need some breaking in.
Gates belts have always been pretty decent for me for other machines. And for half the price of others. Why would you replace it? I'm not really out in the mud wailing on it.
What do you mean by a Maverick belt? Just a factory Can Am Maverick belt or is there a company that makes another belt? I'm pretty sure Commander and Maverick run the same belt.

Just not a fan of the gates belts. We used to be a dealer for gates belts and I was always warranting them because they would crack out and push the ribs up. Now I just use oem for everything I work on.

They outtys, commanders, and og mavs do use the same length belt but the maverick pn belt holds up the best. I do think the 1000 commanders use the mav belt but the 800 I think just used an outty belt.

Gotcha. I appreciate the info. Thanks.

I'll just echo what @CanAmRancher1 has already said: sure, clutches sound a little noisy, but quite possibly perfectly normal for 'em. The belt box cover mutes ALOT of the "typical" noises they make, so having it off lets 'em talk right to ya. I don't hear mine, I mean, with the cover on, plastics in, seat in, engine running, etc, that should be the same with yours.

OEM BRP Maverick belt was/is regarded as an unbeatable bang-for-your buck/available go-to belt, for most of the v-twin applications: outty 650/850/commander 800 and so on. I mean, it hit the market back in '13 with the drop of the OG, tho nowadays belt technology and the market are offering options. It's still a no-brainer imo.

Awesome. Thanks guys. I'll pick one of those up and use the Gates for my back up.
I sent the vid to STM. They said it's normal except for a slight whine coming off the belt release that I can adjust out with a shim if I want to. Not hurting anything though and the whine doesn't bother so I'll probably leave it. I was worried more about the chatter and that's normal. I thought it was, but for $2k I think I'll double check lol

Yup they are expensive but I sure get a lot more mileage out of them than anything else. That is just my experience I know some guys like the gboost belts also.

Shop at Rocky Mountain or Partzilla for OEM, sometimes Canampartsguy also has OE stuff, for future reference (y)

I was finally able to get BUDs up and running correctly last night. There was some sort of an install error. Older laptop didn't like the MPI drivers I guess or there was a glitch with the program. Dunno, but all set now. I can now see all the Megatech options including the DESS security disable feature if I decide to disable it. I don't think I'm going to now. It hasn't so much as hiccuped on me. I pulled the switch apart and gave it a good cleaning when I first got the machine.

Here are a couple of vids of what the clutch sounds like now.
It's quieted down alot. I'm convinced it just needed to break in a little.
I noticed something else also. STM said the Gates belt was slightly wider. I saw it when I put the over on. The clutch just barely touched the variator cover when it was idling. It mostly when away, but it will completely disappear when I put the Can Am belt on. I'm bummed it scuffed the clutch a little. It was so purdy... Still is really.

Clutch running open

Cover installed

Nice setup. They do make a 1/4 hex socket driver instead of having to go from 3/8 to 1/4. Just fyi.

I don't generally use 1/4" sockets w/ my impact so it doesn't bother me to just grab the adapter at the same time.
She's cleaning up nice thankfully. I'm loving the new gauge cluster.

Speaker wire and wire nuts to install the rock lights  All the lights had wiring that came all the way up to the dash. I pulled it all out and rewired it with good wire and made it so only one pair of wires from the front and one from the rear come to the dash. Tied them together and then to the switch. All soldered and heat shrinked now. Cleaned up and seriously shortened the wiring from sound bar and light bar. Nothing like having 40 extra feet of wiring sitting behind your dash panel. I re installed all the accessories crimp connectors too. Would you believe the hack had no idea how to correctly crimp? Lol
Also installed a phone holder and new winch with all new wiring...
I still have a few touch ups and need new winch bolts so I can add the fairlead. The HF bolts are a joke anyway.

Picked up a nice used set of 28" tires and wheels from a 2020 Maverick X3 this weekend. Unfortunately the offset is wrong for my lift. The tire is hitting the springs in the rear.
Not sure if I'm going to bother with spacers or just flip them. I'd rather have 30s or so. The 36" mudders on my machine just tear the yard up.

Threw the Maverick belt on today and did an oil change. Thankfully the previous owner seems to have done that right. The oil looked like it had just been changed and they used a Rotax filter. I went with Rotella T6 5w40 and a generic filter.
The BRP belt might last longer, but there really isn't much of a difference physically between the two. Here are the measurements.

Added a quick release rumble seat for my youngest when my wife is with us. Couldn't beat it for $130... I'll need better quick release pins. If I nail it while someone is sitting in the seat the pins in the below pic will pull out.
Also threw on some OE 28"x14" Maverick tires and wheels. What a difference in handling, power and just overall.

It's funny how you can be tempted to buy an accessory that isn't necessary or over think/over engineer a DIY solution. I've been tossing around the best way to store/mount my smaller chainsaw on my Commander. Turns out it came with a perfect solution... The lower bed box is literally the perfect size for my Stihl ms180 16" with the scabbard on. It fits snug, but not wedged so it doesn't slide around at all. Enough space for gas and oil etc too.
I included pics of where I was thinking about mounting it.

I thought I fixed my 4x4 when I slid the rear axle back in the diff. Nope. Something is up with the front Visco QE. I needed 4x4 heading up a hill and all I heard was grinding.
I decided I'm not screwing around with the QE diff even though it's the better version. A pretty, shiney, expensive chunk of steel showed up the other day. TorqMaster had a black Friday deal on the TorqLocker so I went ahead and ordered it.
I needed to do my upper a arm bushings also so this was a good time to do everything. I'll do the front bearings while I'm there. Those 36" tires wreaked some havoc...
So far I have everything except the radiator out. My bumper made access to everything easy, but the radiator needs to be moved to get the diff out as well as the upper a arm bolts.
I might move the radiator mounts forward so the bottom is angled out towards the front. That'll make doing upper bushings next time a breeze.
BTW, if there is still any question on the driveshaft diff bolt after all these years... It's 13mm. Red loctite is used heavily....

I gotta salute your attitude on this one. Going elbows deep into a new to you modified machine, isn't for the faint of heart (y)

Looking forward to the "finished product"

God hates a coward! 🤣 I still have pretty short money into the whole rig so I'm still smiling. I've built three Harleys from the frame up and did a nut and bolt resto on my 69 Camaro. Every single nut and bolt. I had it up on a rotisserie. Not much makes me nervous anymore lol It's a sickness.

I installed my TorqLocker tonight in my front diff. Unfortunately it's not meeting the spec of at least .150" with .170" being perfect. I'm at .1435". I have a message in to them. We'll see what they come back with. Hopefully I don't have to machine anything...

Don't see the guts of a Visco-lok very often, cool indeed. Your goo looks burnt/discolored/dirty?

Agreed. It didn't look great to me either. That's not a QE is it? That black spot on the edge made me wonder too.
I literally just got this response. Not sure how I feel about it. What are specs for? The answer doesn't cost them anything for me to give it a try, but it costs me a hell of a lot of time to pull the diff if I run into an issue...
"Thanks for your email. You can run the locker as is. We only see binding around 0.120. The Can-Am differential cases have a huge tolerance range and once in a great while we see a case that's too tight. We include the blue shims for cases that are too wide. If you experience binding in the locker the only way to remedy this is to replace the case. This will also require shimming the case and setting backlash."

I just threw in new a arm bushings. I used the upgraded SATV ones. New were short, but the ones I took out were long on top. Old ones didn't look as bad as I thought also. Glad to have new ones in though. Good to know their history lol.
I only found two of these. I feel like I should replace them. There should be more right?
