450 engine... simple performance mods? EPI Clutch springs?

Are there any mods that you can do to get a little bit more out of the 450 engine? Yes, I know, I should have gotten the 570 engine, but it's too late for that.

Things that are a given... exhaust, air filter, in conjunction with a fuel tuner. But that's a ton of money to spend for 1 hp. Yes, they actually say you only get 1 hp on the FMF website.

Something I'm curious about is this clutch spring kit.

Anyone have any actual experience with this kit? Any idea of what this would do for me? I was also looking at the Dalton brand kit, but they are saying that theirs is ONLY for oversized tires.

you can build and build,,spend tons of money but in reality its a 450cc bike.
you might gain a little power but along with that comes more problems.
put some good 25 inch tires on it and ride it!!
need more power??? drop her in low gear!!

That's all good, but the original question was, what benefit can you expect with installing the EPI Economy clutch kit? You say that we will have more problems with our machine installing this, was this your actual experience?

So, I decided to email them and this was the response. Sounds like a plan to me. For $49 bucks, I say it's worth a shot.

Hi Matt,
The economy kit will help to give you more performance. It will help with more low end and mid-range power, including better acceleration and throttle response. It will work with the stock tires, and still be okay with larger tires or an exhaust system. It should also help to give it a little more power for plowing with the machine. If you have any questions just let me know.

Thanks,

EDIT: Just to make it clear.... I'm not expecting a miracle or anything. I just want to get a little more out of it.

Thanks for posting that. For the small price I will probably give it a shot too. I am not looking for more speed or any miracles either, just a little extra power for getting over obstacles and towing. I do use low all time too like the other poster said to do, that's why I wondered what the effects of this kit would be.

I'll order mine in a few weeks. I have to take my puppy to the vet (to get spayed) on Tuesday coming up and they charge me $45 just to walk in the door. I wonder what this visit will cost? FREE dog turned into 1000 real quick :|. Hahahaha. Love her to pieces though.

Anyways, If you end up ordering one before I do, Please post results, love or hate.

I will probably order it at the end of the week. Don't know how long it will take to ship to Canada. Hopefully I can get it installed in time to try it before our actual ATV trails close for the season, otherwise I will just be riding it on the roads here to the lake when it freezes. Either way I will post my thoughts on it after I try it.

you mean a clutch spring kit? for that price it must be.
dont forget to get the clutch removal tool...40 bucks
a secondary bolt...they are one use only,
and tork everything to spec including belt housing cover.

Yes, it's JUST the springs. I looks like the kit comes with the bolt. I will look into that tool. The few times that I've needed special/one time use tools, I bought them on Ebay, used them and then re-sold them on Ebay as used once, perfect condition for only $5 less than I paid. :)

UPDATE:

I've watched about 20 Youtube videos about Can Am clutches and I haven't seen anyone use any sort of special clutch tool if they were just changing springs. Hmm???

Upon further reading, I see that you DO need to get a new bolt and that one in the picture is not what that is. I just emailed UATV-TECH to see if this is what we need for the 450 engine. They say you only have to replace the secondary one, but while it's apart, why not? https://uatv-tech.com/products/primary-secondary-re-usable-hd-bolt-kit. Some have said that they'd "gotten away" with re-using the bolt, but I'm not going to risk it vs. saving 10 bucks (price of an OEM one).

Today's Update...

I ordered the EPI Economy clutch kit from Amazon, only $44 with tax and shipping. Then I ordered 1 each, M10 x 110mm + M12 x 140mm, grade 12.9 bolts from Fastenal.com. The shipping was more than the dang bolts, LOL. But the total was only like $14. Also picked up a repair manual from Ebay for $22. I've repeatedly watched a bunch of Youtube videos on the spring swap, so I'm feeling really confident about doing this. :)

Next cheap little mod I have in mind is a UNI filter.....

Report back when you get it installed and let us know what you think. I for one have been really happy with the power of the 450. I thought it was going to be a turd but it surprises me in the power department. The added huge bonus is the 24.5 MPG. I mean it just goes forever on a tank of gas it seems. I am coming from a Sportsman 700 too. I would never go back to that machine over this one. So far anyway. Good luck on your install.

I am also happy with the power and speed, don't get me wrong. I am coming from a Honda 3 wheeler that had a whopping 185cc. I think it had 9hp stock and with my mods on it, maybe 11-12. It's just that I like tinkering and If I can get a little more out of it without breaking the bank, that'd be great.

Ughhh, Found out that the primary on a 450 engine is reverse threads, so the bolt I ordered for it will be useless.

Thanks for the detailed post, I ordered my kit the day I originally posted in this thread about it but it didn't ship until today so I am looking forward to installing it when it comes. Just out of curiosity have you noticed if the cvt whine is any louder with the kit on or is it about the same as before.

It sounds the same.

I have done a few things to my 450 recently. Installed the 12 inch aluminum wheels and 26 inch ACT tires that I got off a Outlander 800 XT and I finally got my EPI spring kit installed too. Kit was very easy to install, the instructions that came with the kit were good and easy to follow.

Just like Matts175 said, acceleration seems to be a lot better, when you have to stop on an incline it takes off a lot better. Definitely lost a few km/h on the top speed which is fine because I do not ride fast anyways, the roads where a bit to slippery today to test what the top speed is now too. But the way it performs on the low end is what I was expecting, it is probably comparable with my brothers Sportsman 450 and my fathers Sportsman 400 for the way it performs now, those 2 machines always seemed better when it came to climbing hills and over obstacles.

I know people here say its not worth doing performance upgrades to a 450 and truthfully you probably don't need too because its a very good performing ATV. But for the price of the spring kit, I feel it is worth doing and I wouldn't hesitate to recommend anyone who was thinking of installing one to do so.

I only have 2 things left I want to do now, change my tires to either a set of Mudlites or Zillas and install either the BRP plastic skid plates or the Iron Baltic ones, haven't decided on which ones yet.

Cool. Thanks. Let me know some numbers when you get an actual top speed run. I don't ride fast either, but it'd be nice to know. I wish I lived in a rural area. It would have been nice to do a 0-50mph run. Swap the springs, then repeat immediately after.

I know this is an old thread now, but as an update. I ended up not really liking the higher engagement at 3100 rpm or so and my fuel economy took a major dive it seemed so I changed my springs back to the stock. I also changed from the 26 inch Carlisle ACT tires to 25 inch Interco Swamp Lites. The take off and acceleration is smoother feeling and my fuel economy seems to be back to normal.

With the spring kit and an average of -10 degrees celcius temperature after testing a few tanks of gas I was getting 100 km or so on a full tank. Before the kit I was getting about double that.

On a side note, the Interco Swamp Lite tires after a few rides in the snow and on the lake this winter are a huge improvement over the Carlisle ACT tires.

Keep in mind that these were just my experiences with my riding style in conditions that may be different than what you ride.

You know what? I was plowing snow today and I was thinking the exact same thing. I'm going to switch back too. I guess I'll just Ebay the EPI kit. "Used, less than 10 miles" LOL

UPDATE: Stock clutch springs are back in. Now we just need some snow so I can test.
