And I'm curious again!!!

Just had another thought. My Outlander doesn't have mirrors, it obviously had them originally but someone removed them before I bought it.

I live in Wisconsin( I know I know another friggin cheesehead right?) Does anyone know if mirrors are required on public trails here? I did just a cursory search of DNR site but couldn't find anything there and well I'm feeling lazy. But yes I'm gonna go look some more!

I'd also like opinions on whether they are something I "SHOULD" have, like are they really important or useful or is a guy likely to be just fine without em?

I'll most likely put a set on...just looking for input so I know whether to make it a priority or not.

In NY they are not required, and I know a few people that use them, but I refuse to put them on my machines after having a buddy get stabbed in the neck by one in a roll over in my youth. He lived but that crap was scary. No thanks..
I haven't heard of any off-road situations where mirrors are required. They've always struck me as an on-road thing.

Anyone know otherwise?

YIKES!!!!

Thanks for the reply though.
NH state trails they are mandatory.
Live free or die my ass.

That said I do like being able to keep an eye on the kids behind on the trail.

Having mirrors save a lot of rubbernecking! Just yesterday I went on an all day trip north of Fairbanks and was able to see friends behind me without turning my head. If I didn't see them, then I would turn around and pull them out where they got stuck. I love my mirrors and will always use them. Also good to notice a moose or grizzly bear or polar bear chasing me.

Rear view mirrors are a requirement here (among a long list of other stuff), but even if they weren't, I couldn't ride without them. I feel it just gives me a lot more awareness about my surroundings, if a faster vehicle is coming behind me or something.

Also, in a group ride, the "common etiquette" in all of the groups I've been is that everyone must keep watch of the vehicle behind. Just a quick eye contact every few minutes, to make sure the person behind you hasn't gotten lost, had a breakdown or an accident. I think this would get really uncomfortable, really fast, without mirrors.

I agree 100% with Harpo and freewill but will add I am NOT a fan of forced compliance. Mainly because it never stops and next thing you know you are going in for a state mandated inspection to use the trails. It starts with mirrors then brake lights make sense as well as headlights , next you have turn signals. We all are coming up on emissions testing which could be a ban on aftermarket exhausts like snowmobiles have here or even tailpipe emissions testing.

I do this testing in NH for motorcycles and yes I find some bikes that the owners were oblivious to safety issues. But at the same time I hate how it gets more constricting every year and forces some to choose to simply ignore the law. While I like mirrors on my atv I don't think they should be forced on people. Likewise I would love one of the canam twins or a sport quad with a pipe but with noise constraints getting tighter around here its a hard pass.

Fellow Wisconsinite here. I searched "mirrors" in the regulations, the only references to them are when measuring the width of the ATV/SXS.

They are calling these accessories "Not essential" so the way I read it they are not necessary.

As far as mirrors go, I have the Powermadds with the flip out mirrors. As others have said they are nice to have in a group, especially if we have the kids with us. Personally, I don't like the big stand off mirrors that BRP offers.

Does anyone know what mirrors would fit a '23 850 XT MAX? The handlebar covers seem to prevent a 'standard' handlebar mount.

Thanks,

Larry
You'll have to go with BRP unless you remove that XT handguard as far as I can tell.

Thanks, have to try harder to find those I guess. I've only seen the ones that have the mounting bands for a 'normal' handlebar.

Sorry for the hijack, OP!

Snap a picture of what you have.

I used brembo mirror mounts for a motorcycle on both my kawasaki and traxter xt. They attached where the brake master cylinder mounts to the bar and have a threaded mirror mount. I am sure different brands are out there and would fit from various motorcycles.
Here where I ride, most have mirrors. I ride a lot with 5 to 8 ATVs. Taking the time to turn around to see if the person is behind you is dangerous. Having a mirror lets you see them. Also it is a club rule and just smart ,you must run with your lights on at all times. Here is a shot of mine and it works great.

running with lights on is a given, but i tend to smash mirrors off.my sxs mirrors lasted 1 whole day.that was it for me.i hate riding with a herd of turtles anyway.my bil knows to hit the throttle heavy if he wants to ride with me.
Here in Quebec a single mirror on the left side is mandatory. Mine is set to 'give' if it is impacted by something (tree, ground, my head).
I would use one even if it was not mandatory.

Never had a mirror on an ATV but oddly I installed three on the two UTVs I owned. I go through some rough areas, but I'll try one with the new machine and see if it lasts. It would be handy to not look around so much.
