Can-Am To Enter UTV Market

During an interview with our sister publication, Powersports Business, Bombardier Recreational Products CEO Jose Boisjoli revealed Can-Am will soon enter the side-by-side market.

While a specific date for product availability wasn’t announced, we expect a UTV to be unveiled as a late 2009 model.

“Innovation is the name of the game in our industry,” Boisjoli said to Powersports Business. “Five years down the road, our product will come with advanced technology at a faster pace.”

Don’t expect the new side-by-side to be a product similar to the Rhino or Teryx, as Can-Am has been known to release atypical products in the ATV business.

Boisjoli said BRP focused its R&D resources on the new Spyder three-wheeled motorcycle first, before turning to the side-by-side market.

“It’s not a question of money. It’s a question of resources,” Boisjoli said on why BRP decided to focus R&D on the Spyder and not on a UTV.

“We have to decide where to invest the resources, and we decided to invest in the Can-Am roadster before the side-by-side business. But it will come.

“One day we’ll have a side-by-side. That’s clear.”

We expect the side-by-side to more closely resemble the Polaris RZR rather than a Rhino, and come with the Outlander 800’s powerful liquid-cooled V-twin four-stroke.

The Can-Am tour truck was at my local riding place today so I tried to see if I could squeeze any info out out them. First thing he said was model year 2010.

Then I asked about the engine, (1200), he said BRP really doesn't tell them much because they know they would be spilling their guts to the public. He was quick to point out that anything over 800cc was illegal in four states.

The one thing he was positive about was it won't be released until it was perfected and better than anything out there.

Didn't seem to concern Arctic Cat very much, with their Thunderkitten.

Aren't the SxS's classified differently then ATV's when you register them? Something like a lightweight utility vehicle?

800 is too small for this vehile. the RZR boasts a speed of 55mph.. wow I am almost falling out of my chair i am soo impressed. :( if it's a thousand pounds it needs at least a thousand CC's IMO

I wish they would give us some news. I am not a fan of the Razrs Durability. I love the full size ranger but it is for a different application. The can am hopefully will fill the void I have with the Ranger. I would like the Can Am as long as the frame is stronger.

After telling my dealer I was interested in a Razr if I could not get a CAn Am he has said it will be announced at the next dealer meeting (maybe the one where they will see the new watercraft) This meeting is approx. 2 months away.Is there any more info out there about this ?? It has been almost 2 weeks since the 2009 release and it got quiet in here.

Just saw this on Offroad.com. Seems the 2010 info istrue.

After long discussions and many considerations, Can-Am has decided to push the release of the long awaited SXS into the year 2010. Its not a money issue for sure, but more of an intentional strategy by a very intelligent company to make sure that when their UTV comes to the market, it is the very best.
