Can-Am To Enter UTV Market

During an interview with our sister publication, Powersports Business, Bombardier Recreational Products CEO Jose Boisjoli revealed Can-Am will soon enter the side-by-side market.

While a specific date for product availability wasn’t announced, we expect a UTV to be unveiled as a late 2009 model.

“Innovation is the name of the game in our industry,” Boisjoli said to Powersports Business. “Five years down the road, our product will come with advanced technology at a faster pace.”

Don’t expect the new side-by-side to be a product similar to the Rhino or Teryx, as Can-Am has been known to release atypical products in the ATV business.

Boisjoli said BRP focused its R&D resources on the new Spyder three-wheeled motorcycle first, before turning to the side-by-side market.

“It’s not a question of money. It’s a question of resources,” Boisjoli said on why BRP decided to focus R&D on the Spyder and not on a UTV.

“We have to decide where to invest the resources, and we decided to invest in the Can-Am roadster before the side-by-side business. But it will come.

“One day we’ll have a side-by-side. That’s clear.”

We expect the side-by-side to more closely resemble the Polaris RZR rather than a Rhino, and come with the Outlander 800’s powerful liquid-cooled V-twin four-stroke.

just out of curiosity.. what is the real attraction to the SxS. why do you prefer sitting in it like a car, to riding on it like a bike?
I am not bashing SxS's I just am curious as to why people are switching to them.. is there an advantage that I don't see? I've never ridden one so I am genuinly asking.

Maybe some of them are OFM. Trust me the RZR is not! Ride one sometime!!

In my case it is a physical thing. Arthritic hand and wrist are kinda putting the kabosh on thumb throttling.

BUT Its great to ride with a partner along side you instead of behind you banging helmets all day. I would be totally bored with the standard SxS's but the sport models (RZR) kick ass.

I bought my Polaris only because I was tired of waiting for the Can-Am SxS. When it does come around, I am sure it will be a sport model too and I may then trade up if it is trail rideable, meaning around 50-52 inches wide.

Oh, believe me I'm there on my next vehicle, allthough I love the Outy, thisold farthas a few "senior issues" also. By then the can-am SxS will have been out a few years and the "new model bugs" will be worked out, hopefully , if not it's the RZR.

I admit.. the RZR looks amazing. It is by far the kickassest of trail cars. for me, I like sitting higher. and feeling the handlebars in my hands and that feeling of riding.. standing at times etc.. vs sitting. but I can see for thouse with bad knees, or hand/hands like was mentioned why they would be more comfortable, and thus have a more enjoyable ride in the SxS.

for thouse wondering "if" the Can-am will be trailable... the answer is.. OF COURSE IT WILL. their SxS is going to live up to the "R" in BRP it won;t be your grampa's farm SxS its going to be a sport/trail car, built mainly with recreation in mind.

I just saw on dirtrax tv a show about the 09 can am's and one of the guys from BRP said they have the first prototype done and in testing right now and all he could say is that it is deff. all can am. I have no doughts that it will be better than the RZR in every way which is gonna be real hard to do, cuz the RZR is bad arce.
I also herd from one of the can am reps and he was telling me there may be 3 different motors offered for it. one is the 800r, 2nd is a version of the 990, and not for the weak hearted a 1200 triple. Also it will be a cross between baja and a trophie truck.
Eather way I just wanna see it and ride it for myself.

Saw thisthe other day when watching a video of the 09 model intros.

Chaz Rice, Media Relations, Can Am.

In the next few years, you are going to be extremely excited about the product lineup. This is only the tip of the iceberg. José Boisjoli (BRP's President and CEO) confirmed that we will be delivering a new SXS in 2010. That's something that we are extremely excited about. We've tested our first prototype and I can tell you, it is a Can Am!

Joyners are cool, but way too wide(64") for most "organized trails".

There used to ba a Joyner dealer in my town, I checked out the ones that he had in stock, they are well made and look to be a bargain at the prices that he had listed.

They don't have a "finished" look like our quads do tho.
