Can-Am To Enter UTV Market

During an interview with our sister publication, Powersports Business, Bombardier Recreational Products CEO Jose Boisjoli revealed Can-Am will soon enter the side-by-side market.

While a specific date for product availability wasn’t announced, we expect a UTV to be unveiled as a late 2009 model.

“Innovation is the name of the game in our industry,” Boisjoli said to Powersports Business. “Five years down the road, our product will come with advanced technology at a faster pace.”

Don’t expect the new side-by-side to be a product similar to the Rhino or Teryx, as Can-Am has been known to release atypical products in the ATV business.

Boisjoli said BRP focused its R&D resources on the new Spyder three-wheeled motorcycle first, before turning to the side-by-side market.

“It’s not a question of money. It’s a question of resources,” Boisjoli said on why BRP decided to focus R&D on the Spyder and not on a UTV.

“We have to decide where to invest the resources, and we decided to invest in the Can-Am roadster before the side-by-side business. But it will come.

“One day we’ll have a side-by-side. That’s clear.”

We expect the side-by-side to more closely resemble the Polaris RZR rather than a Rhino, and come with the Outlander 800’s powerful liquid-cooled V-twin four-stroke.

hey guys new member. i build a custom sxs using the 800 rotax out od the outlander 800. i only use the motor and ignition. i use the rhino rear diff. it is not the junk you see with the stock rhino with a 800 motor stuck in it. it is a ground up built around the 800 motor. i am in the desert and see 70mph easy with 80mph on the street with the 800 motor. motor is stock with a slip on hmf and custom intake. with the rino diff gearing it has more top speed then the can am diff. anyway the 800 has more than enough power for a sxs. i have built 10 of these for local customers. they kill anything built today, stock or modified. i have never had a motor problem, not one! i have just built my last on with all the mods. i will post a pic when i get time. thanks guys!

The 800r motor is plenty of power if they can keep the unit under a thousand pounds. Put an Outty 800 Max XT, full of fuel and gear on a scale and it is over 900lbs. Now put a pipe and a clutch on that and it is one fast machine, with leftover power at any speed. If BRP put Pistons and Valves similar to the Woods in, and a larger T/B, they could have around 82HP with a pipe. The RZR has what, 50 ?

ELKA SHOCKS 20" LONG WITH HCR ARMS, GEAR ONE REAR AXLES AND HUBS WITH DIRT SPORT SPINDLES. WENT TO GLAMIS DUNES AND WENT OVER 70 MPH EASY ON ITS FIRST OUTING. HAD IT OVER 80 ON THE STREET. ITS ALMOST TOO MUCH POWER FOR THE WHEEL BASE. THE MOTOR ON THIS ONE IS A 990 WITH CAMS, LTE TWIN PIPES AND A 51 MM TB BORE. I DO THE TB BORE AT MY SHOP.

Welcome to the forum man....

I have talked to several dealers, reps, etc...and they have told me that it will be 2010 before they hit the floor...I expect BRP to announce the new models around June or so, but not sure if it will be in that announcement or later in the year...

Compared to the Rhino, the Teryx is all that. Try a Rhino if you want to see loud and uncapable. We drove the new EFI and it vibrated all to heck, like the dash was going to fall apart. No power up a steep hill. Teryx conquered the hill with ease, no vibrations. Don't like the non opening hood but the rest is much better. I like the RZR though and hope that BRP's version is similar to that type of machine.
