Can-Am To Enter UTV Market

During an interview with our sister publication, Powersports Business, Bombardier Recreational Products CEO Jose Boisjoli revealed Can-Am will soon enter the side-by-side market.

While a specific date for product availability wasn’t announced, we expect a UTV to be unveiled as a late 2009 model.

“Innovation is the name of the game in our industry,” Boisjoli said to Powersports Business. “Five years down the road, our product will come with advanced technology at a faster pace.”

Don’t expect the new side-by-side to be a product similar to the Rhino or Teryx, as Can-Am has been known to release atypical products in the ATV business.

Boisjoli said BRP focused its R&D resources on the new Spyder three-wheeled motorcycle first, before turning to the side-by-side market.

“It’s not a question of money. It’s a question of resources,” Boisjoli said on why BRP decided to focus R&D on the Spyder and not on a UTV.

“We have to decide where to invest the resources, and we decided to invest in the Can-Am roadster before the side-by-side business. But it will come.

“One day we’ll have a side-by-side. That’s clear.”

We expect the side-by-side to more closely resemble the Polaris RZR rather than a Rhino, and come with the Outlander 800’s powerful liquid-cooled V-twin four-stroke.

once again polaris trumps the sxs industry with the new polaris RZR4 released this week. a special edition blue white and silver 4 seater SPORT sxs. amazing that they came out with the ranger in 1997 then laid in the wood work untill 07 (besides the basic ranger) and is now blowing everyone away with 3 types of side by sides of the sport variety, standard sport, the s edition with long travel and higher power, and now the 4 seat sport with long travel and still keeping it purely performance. COME ON can am please release the damn thing already

and today polaris rzr trumps the market again with the first eps on a sport sxs.Can-am might have to delay the release of the sxs if the rzr gets a big azz motor that they should get here in 7 months.Because its gona be a hard one to beat. They are gona have to beat it if its gona sell in this market.........

I would put money on it that Can Am has already developed DPS into the new S/S espescially with DPS in the Spyder, Outlander and Renegade now... Maybe Polaris already knows that or is betting on it? S/S have been great sellers for Polaris there not gonna give up the throne without a fight... only problem is they dont have a Rotax!

Where did you see that about the EPS? I can't find that anywhere. That might be enough to put an end to my waiting for CA. They are really letting the side by side market get away from them.

Thanks for the link. I called my closest Polaris dealer this afternoon and he said he hadn't heard anything about it. I guess he was wrong.

SxS comming soon!

Select dealers being invited to the unveiling of the SxS within the next few weeks. apparently testing has been ongoing for awhile. Rumours are that it will be more along the lines of the Razor S than other SxS's. I think there is only one model being released rumoured motor is everything from 800r to 990 to a 1200. Sorry, no more info at this time.

2011 Outlanders will have all new brakes, new chassis design and styling changes. Sorry, no more info at this time.

Testing? They have been testing them for a couple of years now.

Qtr 2 of this year is the official scheduled release. That is direct from the president of BRP. My guess is at the dealer meeting.

From a recent (end of '09) Dealer News interview with Boisjoli. So the "next year" reference is 2010.

BRP Roars Into 2010 with New Recreational SXS

A RECREATIONAL SXS, the company’s first side-by-side vehicle, will be launched in Q2 of next year. Boisjoli was tight-lipped about details but said the product will support the company’s Can-Am positioning. That means a high-performance machine that appeals to experienced, aggressive riders, one built upon the company’s championship racing heritage. When asked if BRP’s new machine would remind people of the very popular Polaris RZR, Boisjoli declined to answer directly. “We want to be No. 1 with customers in products that support our Can-Am brand positioning,” he replied. Look for a hot rollout similar to the sophisticated marketing campaign that accompanied BRP’s Spyder launch back in the spring of 2007."

My dealer says next month...and its going to be a sport machine. I hope it has the same bolt pattern as the outies so I can use my rims on it. My warranty runs out in Sept so its time for a trade in.

I gave up on Can Am and their side by side. I am a pretty die hard Can Am guy but I just couldn't wait. I ended up buying a Polaris RZR S with a turbo Weber motor that with a different ECU puts out 178hp. I got it for $17,000. I figured that is close to what the Can Am will go for plus, I know it won't have near the horsepower that this one does.

I saw real pics of sections or closeups of the rumored SxS.
it had the traditional yellow BRP color, and it resembled more a UTV than a SxS..
It had dump bed, and Rhino like features.
however to me it seems to support the tip that there would be 2 versions one Sport and another Utility (wich is the one I saw)..
If they launch the high end SxS, I would guess that the Utility version could be right there afterwards!
