I don’t know how many people know this but the part on the sending unit that the pressure regulator goes into and the fuel pump goes into, is an actual fuel filter. I’ve been having issues like everybody else , thought I had it sorted out and come to find out that this damn thing is plugged solid. I bypassed it with a hose and I’m putting a fuel filter on the outside of the tank. At $500 a sending unit Can Am should be ashamed of themselves For not listing this as a replaceable part. This is probably the reason behind so many people changing pumps and changing regulators and burning everything up all because this filter is plugged up. Pictures enclosed And now this machine runs like an absolute bear. My machine is a 2013 Can-Am Commander 1000 XT.

Were there any identifying numbers or wording on the old filter?

Is that housing serviceable? Or did you destroy to separate it?

I’ll take a look tonight but with it not being serviceable or attainable for purchase as a sealed unit I made a hose to take it’s place and will go with a billet in-line serviceable filter . I honestly thought I had the machine good to go until it acted up again and I found this . The fuel would barley come out of the tank and now it’s like a horse pissing with that filter gone .

That actually really starts to make sense, as I think about it. The older Gen1 bikes had an external inline fuel filter, serviceable.

I've never seen a Gen2 'fuel filter' (aside from the pickup sock), until now. Having it sealed in that housing would explain why I've never seen/heard of one.

Looking at a pic for say the fuel pump assy on like my old 650XMR, there's that same suspect little black housing on top of the fuel pump discharge. Guessing BRP stuck the fuel filter in there.

So you were able to retain the regulator?

Yes I was able to retain the regulator. I took another look at that filter and there is no numbers on it at all inside or outside. The nipple that comes off the bottom of the regulator I put a hose on to and then I put the hose right directly on the nipple on the top of the pump and clamped them down . The hose was cut the length to match the length of that housing with the nipples of the two pieces inserted into it so that it came out the same length . No issues at all doing this mod. I should’ve taken pictures.

Ok so there is a bunch of different style but these are the main 2 styles of pumps. The old ones like in my first picture. Yes they have a filter above the pump as you said. You can get that filter from quantam. Yes you can delete it and install filter outside of tank and still retain regulator but the issue is the regulator housing on the fuel pump side has no lip to help retain the hose. I have deleted multiple filters only to have customers machine die because the hose came off the regulator housing. This was before I knew about the Quantam filter housing. I now install the Quantam housing.

The newer style pump does not have the filter above the pump. I really don't know how they filter well enough to keep injectors clean because most gen2s also dont have filter outside of tank either.

Also make sure the hose you used was submersible fuel line.

the maintenance schedule for my '13 outlander called for inspection/ replacement of the prefilter. by '15 or '16, the mainenance was significantly reduced. that prefilter is no longer on the list. It's a real PITA to work on.

If quantum lists it’s a ghost . The hose used was one that came with the replacement fuel pump so I assume it’s meant to go in the tank. Clamped down proper there is no chance of it coming off either end . Please post the quantum part number if you have it .
