Greetings all this is my first post.I just purchased a very low use 2009 DS250 for my 14 yr old daughter.Since this is my first ATV experience I have a few questions for the knowledgable folks here if I may.Would it be a good idea to change the oil ? what about coolant? What other maintainance steps should I be looking at first.I'm not the most mechanical guy but should be able to handle the basics. However as she gets more comfortable with it I suspect I'll be picking your brains about possible performance upgrades.

Thanks Fred

Fred,

Coolant will last the life of the quad, really the only maintenance you need to do is keep the engine oil changed and monitor the drive chain (frequently if still the junk factory chain).

I recommend using a good synthetic motor oil, I use Mobil1 because of it's readily available pretty much anywhere. Follow the weight chart in your owners manual for the climate you are typically operating it in. Just remember the thinner the oil, the less HP it takes to pump it.

There is a screen oil filter (the engine is based off an old Honda design), make sure you clean that when you change the oil.

When you get more hours on it, you can start thinking about checking the valve clearance but we haven't had to adjust any yet, been holding up well.

Thanks for the reply mbracing. The synthetic sounds like a good idea, unfortunately I didn't get the manual with it so can't verify oil weight,I will try to find a manual online. As for the chain it is the factory original, are they problematic thus should I be looking at replacing it?
Thanks Fred

I use a DID ert2 chain on my z, I don't think I need a chain like this on the 250. What have you used and what have you decided is a good replacement for it. I checked the tension on it this past weekend while I was working on it and it has some slack, not bad but I think rather than just continually adjusting the stocker I want to just replace it with a good one that is reasonably priced. I was thinking about getting one of the yellow ones from eBay but never had any experience with them and don't like wasting time/money on sub par parts.
