well me my wife and some of my buddys went to majestic trails today and i have a complaint about the can am's!.............. when going down a trail and you let off the gas and it starts to engine break, then you hit the gas again it clunks? what would be causing this? seems like gears clunking to me seems really hard though! my wife says her 500 was doing it also...... is this normal or what is going on?

next is a question! my buddy thought he would try to go through a deep pit in his Polaris ranger but he got stuck so i hooked my winch to him and tried to pull him...... it was pulling my renegade in the water so i put it in 4wd and tried backing up and it started to spin and dig holes then it started to smoke after i got him out and went back to the trailer when i hit gas from a stop it would squeal a little so we drove home and i unloaded it and it made no noise? did i mess up the belt? i guessing i glazed it? do i need a new belt now? or what should i do? i only have 60 miles on the bike with about 8 hrs on engine so i need to do my first service.

The clunk is normal, you will learn how to minimize the noise by using your thumb a little differently. The belt is glazed, you should be able to scrub it clean by riding in low at slow speed, to keep the belt down in the sheave that caused the problem in the first place, if that makes any sense. Ride it in low, for a slow ride , a few wheelies should clean it up..

The winch is your best friend with a belt drive quad, I use mine a lot to pull guys out. You dont want to smoke your belt, so use the winch when you can.

X2. They all clunk like that just the way the clutches are. And as stated try not to "tow" with the bike esp something like a ranger. Heavy. Winch, winch, winch.

As others stated the clunk is a Can-Am trait, you'll learn to ignore it.

As for the winching. First you should have winched him backwards out of the slop if you were going to do it.

Second never use the winch as a tow rope. They are designed to pull, not be pulled on. That is a good way to break your winch.

By trying to pull him in reverse you put a lot of stress on your quad. You were putting a big load on your front axles and pinion. It's a good way to snap a axle of bust up your front diff. If you want to tow someone out always use forward low gear.

The smoke as stated was your belt. Hopefully it's only glazed and you didn't wear a groove into it. Once you ride it for a bit if you hear noise or feel any weird vibration then you should change your belt, and they are NOT cheap.

On bigger stuff like ads or a really stuck atv sometimes o have had to hook my girls quad to my rear when winching just to keep me from sliding. Her not winching just 8 tires planted instead of 4

I pulled that way for 2 reasons! 1 his hitch was gone in the mud and 2 i would not have been able to pull him up over that edge! I have rode it around the yard in low have not heard the noise yet. When i do my first service i'm going to pull the cover off and check the belt!

nice :)
Why you think i messed up the belt?
because that is what new users do to belts.

it is not uncommon for people new to can-am to burn their first belt in less than 100 miles and have to replace it. These machines have way more power that most people are used to coupled with a belt drive system that is different than other machines. This leads to a lot of burnt belts needing replacement.

You can only smoke them once or twice before you screw them up and they should be replaced. You should replace it as soon as you smoke it once but typically you can get away with it once so long as you don't really smoke it hard.

OEM belt is about $150~$180 each. The gates belt is around $30~$50 each.

Chock it up to a lesson learned and tell your SxS buddy to fix his winch or stay out of the mud. That or next time someone else can wreck their machine hauling his dumba$$ out of the hole.

JD, your belt will most likely survive this time, but if you keep pullin' your friends out of holes they shouldn't have been in, in the first place, you should have a spare belt. Use your wench, and "anchor" to another quad, or a tree so you wont be using your clutch and belt. Most of us have done that at one time or another.lol:th_smiliethumbsup:

Is it a good idea to hook another quad behind mine???? Seems like that would put alot of stress on the frame.....

Just as a hold. You will not be moving backward. If that still isn't enough to pull someone out of a "stick" you need to rethink how you are pulling. Might need to use a snatch block to double your pulling.Google "winching techniques" , lots of good info.

I have the Carbon fiber Gates. So far I like it, the "bite" is better than the OEM, and there is no signs of the annoying squeal that the stocker had.

30c3750... $70 - $80 Carbon fiber
30g3750... $50 or so Kevlar
