Front tie rod clearance question

953 Views 2 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  bcorbett
I just bought a used 08 650xt.

It had the stock tires all the way around. 26x8x12 in the front.

I bought and mounted big horn 2.0s at 1 inch wider 26x9x12 and now the tie rods are really close to touching. They aren't touching but they're about a quarter inch from the tires...

Is that enough space? It just has me a little worried and I saw a pair of wheel spacers is $70 :th_smiliefrustrated .

Will I be ok or should I try spacers or washers or something? Thanks men!

I'd say you are fine. I've got less than that on mine and they have never rubbed.
One thing you should do is jack up the front end and spin the tire by hand. As you do that, watch the clearance gap. You might find you have one spot on the tire that's closer than the rest - just make sure it clears all the way around.
My tie rods just barely rub the inside of the tire but don't seem to affect anything. I'm not sure if all are but mine are smoothed over on the edge where they contact. I'm just not sure if the old owner ground them down and smoothed them out or if that's just how they come.
