Fuel Pump Won't Shut Off

2696 Views 5 Replies 3 Participants Last post by  styk
2007 Outlander 650XT: After riding a while and stopping for a break I turn off my Can am and the fuel pump continues to run, sometimes up to 10 to 15 minutes. It will shut off on it's own. I replaced the fuel pump relay and it still continues to have this problem. My local dealer doesn't seem to know what it could be. Not sure if it would be the fuel pump. Anyone ever experience this same problem??

How did you determine that it's the pump not turning off? Are you sure it's not the sound of pressure venting from fuel tank? If it's the latter, open the fuel cap. If the sound disappears, that's you issue.
I did remove the fuel cap and you can hear the fuel pump running, as well as putting your hand towards the bottom of the fuel tank and you can feel the vibration of the fuel pump.
Fuel pump should be under ECM control. Pull the relay fuse, should shutdown immediately. The ECM should turn the relay off as soon as you turn the key off or use the kill switch. My guess is your ECM is misbehaving.
Thanks for the information, but the fuel pump is in the fuel tank.
Indeed, you are correct and the ECM controls it.
