Let's talk about off-road GPS options

With the purchase of the new unit, I'd like to add a tablet style GPS to it.

On the 850 we ran different apps (trail view, OnX ect.) on the cell phone. This worked but it's time for a bigger screen. This is definitely NOT because my eyes/vision is getting sharper with age.

I've seen these 10 and 11 inch tablets with SIM slots on Azon. I know, I know Chinese junk but I'm looking for some real feedback. 6-14 hundred for the Garmin units just seems unrealistic. I don't always ride where there is cell service. Tieing ribbon to the tree branches takes way to long.

Does anyone have any input for a quality GPS unit?

Thanks in advance.

@ Vwluca - have you had the Garmin in remote areas? How does the Garmin do when cell and other service is nonexistent?

I took have heard good things about:

Gaia
OnX
Ride command

With options like this - is the Garmin a step above for the cost?

Good to Know

I'm very pleased with mine. Yes many times I'm far north with no cellular signals.

It's a GPS so it doesn't need any 😉

I also have a SD card for ATV trails for Quebec.

The only "negative" thing for me, is that it's a pretty complete unit with lots of functions that I don't use/need for trail riding.

These are pictures when it was 1 week old january 2022.
All stickers were removed the following days 😉

I’ve had a pair of Garmin gps for 25ish Yrs now. Honestly been so long I don’t remember how long. I am completely out of touch with what is on the market today.

196 and 296. Work well, I’ve used them flying, in trucks, jeeps, the CanAm, boat. You name it. They have various topo, or marine cards. I have them for my areas. I forget what model they got up to in the series, but you can probably get a used one relatively inexpensive. They have never once failed, that the best I can say about them. It pops off easy and fits in my coat pockets for hunting etc.

There are multiple adapters for mounting, antennas, power cords, etc etc. they keep a nice cookie trail on them, and lots of info in the system. I’ve seen this question a few times, so I snapped a couple pics for ideas, even if not one of these. Good luck.
