I have exact same machine with about 3500 miles, bought with 2500 miles a couple years ago.
Pros: Good ride, decent power for a 400, fun to ride.
Cons: prone to electrical issues, every person I've talked to that has one had gauge cluster die and voltage reg issues including myself.
Overall I like it, it's my kids so I don't ride it that much. Will do 55mph. Depending on price I would buy another. In my area Midwest I would say $2000 would be around as much as I'd spend.

Had 2004 400 Outlander Max for 14 years. Miss it now that I sold it. Wife & I loved it. More power than we ever needed, even on steep Colorado trails. Would easily top 50 MPH with both of us aboard. Never any big problems, only a few small problems. Let it sit too long during winter so had a few carb problems & battery problems. Was afraid it was due for some major problem so sold it to buy Maverick Trail.

Looks like it's been taken care of, that's a good sign.

It's "just" a base model bike, but that's no big deal. I see they added a winch, so that's good.

As others have said, they are great little bikes if properly kept up and maintained. Mine's been a scrappy little unit, despite what the barn slumber did to it. Depending on price, it'd be a worthy purchase, I think. Yeah about $2k is prolly the ceiling for that one there, imo.

I have the following problem... When I start engine all idiot lights on the speedometer are lit up but the speedometer not functioning and lights will not shut off?? Wiggled a few places but nothing?

I did so around battery terminal and also the regulator, which I replaced a year ago approx..

The machine runs properly, as far as I can tell? I read s few things about cleaning speedometer sensor or something?

Why would everything light up and nothing technically function, tied to dirty speedometer sensor?

What do I need to check? Thx

Hmmmm

I have this 05 model 400 with the Cluster problem! Just started. I have previously dealt with replacing regulator i bought online, pretty cheaply.

This cluster issue with my speedometer, how do I repair it?

I like my machine. I bought it almost 3 years ago with about 800 miles on it, maybe less. Have also had fuel pump issues thus we added an little electric fuel pump as it was impossible to figure out and fix the vacuum version that exists??

My neighbor has a 04 400 with 3k miles, it's a good machine, as far as I know I think he has only done u-joints brakes and a carb rebuild. I bought a 13 400 for my son it's been good so far, we've put about 500 miles on it this year. I would scarf that one up it looks very clean for a 16 yr old machine

Yellow is such a sharp little color on these things... wish I could find an old yellow max with a bad engine or something, heh...

I personally wouldn't invest $3600 into a 16 yo small bore carbureted atv, unless that plow is worth two grand on its own (do you even need the plow?) but that's just me and my very limited budget. You can find much newer V-twin bikes for that amount, at least down here anyway...

Hopefully the plow was not used on it, Id walk away from any deal if it had a plow used on it. Usually a machine with that low of kms was used to utility work, wouldn’t doubt they used that plow and say the plow is new but that’s just me. $2800 USD sounds fair as long as they didn’t use the plow with it

if they are a good machine
Funny, we were hauling the log splitter in and out today as well as several 12 cu ft loads of split logs to the crib when I found myself thinking of this group and the stories I hear about new and fancy bikes. Now mine isn't yellow, its a green Bombardier 330 and I don't know how many miles are on it. I may have given a thousand for it, but likely less some ten years (or more) ago.
It had a charging issue and i hesitated replacing the "Alternator" thing (From RMSTATOR) out of stubborness/stupidity for a couple of years and three batteries. Other than that, I ran it dry last year (main and reserve) being stupid again. It fouled something that I never figured out. Everyone had an idea, No ne had a solution. I got on it one day and it ran fine again. Never did figure out what had gone wrong.
Now I have a receiver hitch on the back so I can tow whatever has a 1 7/8" or 2" ball. My 1' outboard, the really heavy splitter and those wagons loaded with wet sections of tree trunks to be split and the split wet wood headed for the crib.
As well, My neighbor, Joe, showed us early on how to wrap a chain 'round a 12 foot section of tree trunk and drag it down to the splitter or to the sawmill (one beautiful Walnut gave up a dozen 4" x 12+" x 12' slabs) over logging trails up and down hills (Low Gear 4WD, of course).
Also down to the pond or bottom field, or up to the top of the ridge or over one or another of the various logging trails, over to a neighbor or just down to the mail boxes and back.
Summer, Winter, Spring and Fall, the little 4by does it all.
We got rid of our 2004 Hyundai Elantra at the end of 2019 but the B330 is still ticking.
Oh, yess, still using the original factory tires, muffler, etc (just the Electronic thin ahmahjig from RM STATOR and battery are replacements.
I rolled it a few years back, well, tipped it over, and broke the right rear plastic "Shelf?" thing - so that's missing.
Otherwise, its all 'factory' if not particularly fresh.

Hope that helps you decide.

Then again, mine could be the exception . . .

Thank you for your input. Sounds like you have a great machine. My major hold up is the price he is asking for a 16 year old Outlander. The seller wants $3,600 for the 2004 Outlander with a new winch and new blade.

It does look very clean. US$ or Canada$? US is way more than I myself would pay for the model and year. US to Canada would be almost 4700 so 3600 could be closer to reasonable. Probably more than I would pay though. I do admit I am biased as I feel my 800 is lacking when I put the tracks on.

I had an 04 it had 4800miles it ran like a beast up here in the mountains I sold it for $2850 with a snowplow. I hated the stupid plastic racks they would break all the time. I never had electric issues sometimes 4x4 wouldn’t engage right away. I changed the belt, ignition fuel pump cleaned the carb and regular maintenance that thing when I sold it still ran strong. I picked up an 06 400 it was too good to pass 450 original miles barely any wear for $3000 runs like a champ. The 400s have plenty of power and are very simple compared to bigger models and reliable just like any can am.

So your in Michigan OK. What is your max your looking to spend. Are you in the u.p. Or over on other side of lake Michigan.? Here's a 450 in Northern wi/Duluth area

Buy it, you won't be disappointed. The price seems reasonable to me. I had and 05 400 and sold it to a friend, she rides with us all the time. My ride had over 2500 miles on it and all I ever did was put brakes on it. It is a great ATV, has plenty of power. If it has the passenger seat and rest you will love that on the trail it makes a great backrest when riding alone and taking a break. I also have an 07 400 and love it. Didn't need 2 400's because I bought a SXS 2019 Can Am Maverick Sport. I use the 400 for the kids to go riding with us. Oh and unlike all the rest of them that have had cluster problems? I have not experienced that and hope I don't. Good luck! FYI I'm in TN. Great places to ride here.

Been unofficially following this for a couple days. I'm outta popcorn so I'll share my tidbit. I picked up a 2016 1000r XTP with 2100 miles and 200 hours that smoked for 4k. 1300 into it and it's running with a new engine.

Someone said it already. Be patient about buying an ATV. With this one in your sights, a better deal just might come up..or you can have him sweat it out a bit and you might be able to play to his desperation. Sometimes just SHOWING UP will get you brownie points towards negotiating. If you've ever tried to sell something on there You know how people promise you the world and never show up.

My advice is to go talk to him...get a conversation going...and bring cash. Do a little social engineering and wave 2500 in front of him. People tend to want to work with you when youre carrying cash and not kicking tires

Yeah- again- all indications are that it's a cherry example of "that" bike.

But- that's still too much $$$ for me (and most of us, apparently) to put into "that" bike, when there are so many other newer/stronger examples to choose from.

It is an excellent specimen but, that price....
Im sure the guys proud of the condition its in but..that price.

Id offer the guy $3000.
Honestly, if someone lowballs me too much I wouldnt sell to him if he changed his mind and offered a thousand over asking price.

I dunno, Im torn...
I paid $3500 for mine, didnt even try to talk the guy down, but its exactly what I was looking for, a 2007 XT camo with xtras in excellent shape low hours/miles and he threw in a tri fold aluminum ramp....and I still had issues with the fuel system, carburetor and random deteriorated rubber and had to put more $$ into it even though EVERYTHING looked brand new.
Which I was ready for so no big deal to me.

He also had a vinson I would have jumped on had not can am been top 3 on the short list.

Guess it depends on how bad you want it and how much money you have in the budget.

Believe me the waiting is the hardest part. Another one in that shape might be hard to come by but a better deal price wise is probably for sure with some patience.

I looked for months while deciding brand new or the newest old carbureted model...

Good luck whatever you decide.
