top speed to slow

I recently bought a commander 1000. I went through the 10 hour break in but couldnt resist the performance key, so around 4 hours into the break in i put in the performance key and enjoyed the power this machine is capable of. I am now at 11 hours on the machine and took for a top speed run. The dealers best sales pitch was this bike runs 80 MPH off the show room floor. Well it takes off with agressive power, it feels like the back tires are breaking traction on black top and pulling strong up to 59 mph then stops pulling and it sounds like it is hitting the rev limiter. The motor is running around 8500 rpms at this speed. Is anyone else having this problem or know of a fix? According to other posts and YouTube i should be seeing top speeds around 70 MPH!

I weigh 300. Wearing light clothes, it was in the 60s last night when i topped it out. From the power I felt it shouldn't have just stopped gaining speed like that. This bike literally would break traction on the asphalt then take off and pull up to 59mph and just quit like there was a speed limiter or something.

I know the rev limiter on my Rene is @8100-8200 I would imagine its the same for your commander but maybe not. Thats alot of weight to hit 70 mph and I don't mean you I mean the machine in general. Rne and Outlanders can't do 80 without removing the speedlimiter so I think your salesman telling you 80 he was a little off but I dont know much about them so I could be wrong

I just got off the phone with my dealer and apparently there is some kind of protection in the computer of the bike and it senses that it is not fully broke in and will get faster as it breaks in more. I hope they aren't feeding me a line of bull.

Sounds like bull to me my first ride on my Rene 1000 hit 70. I don't see how the computer can tell if its broke in. It will be a little quicker once it is broke in all quads usually are but it has nothing to do with the computer

I've had my commander 70. It's like the outlander 800 it gets to 60 quick then takes a little while to climb after that. Wonder if they didn't program your key right? I've heard of a couple of em not being right.

This was discussed in another thread about the break-in period in the ECU. Apparently there is such a feature for the BRP sleds and a couple users and sales people have indicated it is in the can-am ATV/UTV ECU as well. It was based on engine hours and I can neither confirm nor deny it though.

I have my doubts a stock commander is gonna hit 80mph. I think the salesman told you what you wanted to hear so he could sell another machine.

So what you are saying is that once the ECU records a certain amount of hours then it will automatically give you a little more power??

i will do like they say. If i dont see any difference by the time i hit 20 hours then i'm bringing it in and they are going to have to do something with it. The dealer told me that if i want more performance rite now then i could up grade the air filter to a K and N and put a slip of muffler. i dont see the bike having that much gain by just those mods though.

On a hard road my commander 1000 with full wind shield front and back will do 78mph [ on speedo ] anyway , would do this from eary on , I now have about 3000 miles on it and still runs the same with no issues. As far as a breakin chip Yes there is one per my dealer and as I remember I could tell once it was gone. same with my 1200 sled. :aniwheeler6:

I had to call my service guy about another question and I asked him about the ECU and he said yes on the 2 stroke sleds this is true but not on the 4 strokes. And he has never heard of it on the ATV side
Also what does the commander weigh like over 1000 pounds is in the 60's that far off for a machine that weighs that much. Isn't the top speed of a Razr 800 like mid 50's

I had my commander to 70mph with under 10hrs on it. It might have had a little more in it but I let out, only way I see one going 80mph would be some clutch work.

My 2012 Rene 1000 stock with my Speedohealer on it to get past the speed limiter would hit @79 on my GPS so I don't think a Commander with that kind of weight is going to hit 80 without some mods. After I installed Vforcejohns clutch weights I got 83-84 but remember a Renegade is what 3-400 pounds lighter

The motor on these machines are so strong i see it doing way better than 70 with minor mods, even with the fact that it is 1300 pounds. With just enough throttle to engage the drivetrain then punch the throttle to the floor it will break traction on asphalt, and like i said earlier it gains speed very fast then just shuts out at 59MPH. YouTube videos (claiming bone stock machines) show them going 73 MPH. I'm thinking the clutch springs are stuck in low to mid range never hitting high range or my performance key is governed down.

It sounds like bull to me. I've had my commander limited up to a solid 68, it is completely stock performance wise but has every BRP add on you could pretty much think of... rear bumper, light guards, front rack, doors, plow mount, light rack, rock sliders, ext. and I weigh 200 lbs. It does have like 2000 miles on it thou, but yours still seems a little far off.

Had my 2013 Commander 1000 up to 72 on dry flat asphalt bone stock at 13 hrs.

I bought a 1000 ltd. last fall, waited for the breaking period before giving it a go, so I waited 30 minutes, lol.

This machine is a beast, about one month after I own at around I say 600km on it, had it at 124 kmh which is equivalent to 77 mph, now what was amazing about this is how loaded the machine was:

(2) hunters 550 lbs
(4) guns with hard cases 100 lbs
(1) chainsaw
(1) luggage tuff box, full 125 lbs
(1) cooler with food and essentials, (beer) 40lbs

Using a half windshield

So conservatively about 800 lbs of weight on the machine and it wasn't bogged down, never did anything to the clutch, no chip, nothing but stock. I was on the sport mode. This machine has enough power to handle anything.

I've had my 2011 X model up to 78mph, bone stock except for brp full roof with lights, all skid plates and cv guards, and winch, with 2 people and a loaded cooler in the back. It was in 2wd and sport mode. This was well after the break in period though.

Since then I haven't tried it out with new tires.

This is true about break in, me and my son bought maxes at the same time. We raced when he was at 9 hours, me at 15, he was 1 bike length behind me. At 10.1 hours, we raced, he is half bike length behind, thats with him being 70 lbs heavier than me. We both noticed more bottom and midrange after 10 hours.

I smell BS from your dealer,i have the 2011 outty max ltd 800,and in the first 5 miles i held it to the bars till it hit gps speed of 77.1,never has it beat that speed, but it does maintain that speed, even with wife and me,and i am 250# and full pack bags on back and koplin 3.2 up front running down a dirt rr bed going over ruts and junk,it still did 77.1 per my nuvi gps that came on it,as long as i keep my rpms where they should be,at around 7400 max, right now i have rpm problems with my qsc or stm clutches, and its way to high at 7850 so that was why last weekend it would only run 74 gps, bike has 3500 miles, but other than it feeling more midrange and bottom after break in,i dont buy the comments it has a 10 hr break in mode,as mine never got any faster, but i suspect it is the speed limiter the outty has.

I asked my service manager about this myth about the break in chip and yes he said there was such a thing but only on some 2 stroke sleds nothing that is a 4 stroke

Sounds like your black key is programmed as a learner key. Wouldn't be the first time.
