In case anyone was wondering if you can shim a 1k into a 1500 short bed the answer is yes. The question is would any of you take a 4 hour trip like this? I'm thinking I don't trust the cables enough to try it.

My buddy carries his RZR in the back of his short box Chevy. Its 6.5 box and he puts two 2''x2''x8' where the wheels run. It spreads the weight of ATV or UTV out. Seen this idea on the RZR forums and it works. Just make sure you tie it down good.
This is how I did it in my Tacoma. That's a 6'2" bed.
I'd sell this setup now that I don't need it anymore. With the risers, you should be able to fit a max with the tailgate down.

Invest in a headache rack if you're hauling it much.

My buddy just drove his bran new '14 Laramie down from Ontario, had it in Newfoundland about 48Hrs and passed his brothers Can Am through the back windshield loading it up Never think it'll happen, but just a quick slip . .
Haul to Hatfield every year that way. Text Material property
seven hours one way.

Even a 6x6 across the front of the bed to keep the tires back might save the window!
This is how I carry my bike around.

Where do you find risers like that?

Saw some on fisher's ATV world awhile back. Can't remember the manufacturer that made them. They had ratchet straps on them for the front wheels.

Rizerback Racks | Innovative carrier racks for ATV/UTV/Motorcycles

DiamondBack ATV Carrier | ATV Truck Rack | ATV Hauler | Side-by-Side Hauler

These are two I have looked at but I'm worried XMR is too long for both.
The Diamond back will work with an XMR. You may have to use the rear loading extension bars. They handle up to an 84" measurement and the XMR 1k measures 78 from nose to rear axle.

If you are near PA, I'd sell the setup for $300
