Hey everyone.
So I went for my first ride this weekend on my new 1000xmr. When I came home I washed my bike and desided to check the air filter. When I removed the air filter, to my surprise I found it was dirty on the clean side. It's weird cuz the dirty side, where the air filter is was perfectly clean as a new machine should be. Does anybody have any guesses on what happened?

Your problem is more than likely a melted hole in the airbox or the problem I had.

When they assembled the bike they used a bolt too long next to the airbox and it went through the side of the box. It was letting mud/unfiltered air get into my box. Get it checked out asap

If you know how to do a smoke test then do it and be sure so when you take it to the dealer they don't think your full of **** like mine did. (I deal with a different dealer now because of this) I used a plastic bottle and two rubber lines with a cigarette to perform the test. You can Google home made smoke test to find out more on how to do it.

Is the hole where the screw went thru on the top of the airbox? If so, could you see it by taking a pic with a cell phone by putting it in the airbox?

That picture is actually on the very bottom of the box. That heat tape is the factory tape that is on the box. If you have a smaller phone to get inside the clean portion of the box then yes you can. Soon as you enter the clean side it is on the bottom of the box about 3 inches forward.

In my case the hole was harder to see with a phone but after I figured out where it was I could definitely tell it was a hole in the picture from the inside. It also makes it easier to lay flat on your back and slide up under the bike for a better view instead of crouching beside to bike trying to find it.

I called my dealer today and he did think I was crazy... Im taking it in later this week...
I'm going to put my phone in and take some pics to see if I can find it. I'm glad to hear theirs at least one other person with this problem. Lol. Thanks for the heads up!
If I can figure out how to add pics to this post I will. I might have to get the wife involved for that one. Lol

I'm almost positive you got the same issue I had. You can see the first picture inside the clean portion it looks like a hole but not a perfect opening.. it's where the bolt cut through the plastic and just pushed the plastic in. Almost like it threaded into the box.

Sad thing is.. how much of this got into the motor? We will never know but if anything ever goes wrong with my motor that will be the first thing I bring up to the dealer. I'm glad I bought an extended warranty.

Ya that's what I'm worried about... How much got in. Shitty thing is, it was my first ride and theirs only 30km on it... Not even at the 10 hour mark yet.
I'll let you know what my dealer finds but I'm greatly disappointed!!!

Well you're not alone. Also beware of the exhaust getting hot and melting the rear fender right by the left fender at the back side of the seat. My fender has started to sag because of the heat. My dealer filed a claim with can am and they are replacing my fenders but can am told my dealer they will only replace the fenders once and they recommend me to wrap my exhaust. Honestly they should be the ones doing all of this before I even bought the bike if they know this is a problem. I really hate that I've spent 15k on a bike that I have to constantly worry about. Nothing will perform like it though so it is what it is. Just have to be patient and work all the kinks out. Let me know what your dealer comes up with.

I added D.E.I.'s "Tunnel & shield II" to my rear fender and heat tape on the edges because of the heat from my stock exhaust and now aftermarket exhaust...it has helped noticeably...before I added it I couldn't even touch the left rear fender bc of the heat...now I can't tell it. Works great

Yea I'm doing what you did. It should be here sometime this week. I ordered it a couple days ago. I'm going to take my time and get everything in that area covered up real good. I don't want the new fenders getting hot

Update

So I spoke with my dealer yesterday and the service manager tried to tell me I swamped my machine! He said he found dirt under the seat and mud on top of my muffler. I couldn't be leave my ears! I said of course there's mud on the muffler,it's in the wheel well.I asked him how that was possible when the first chamber and air filter were perfectly clean? He had no anwser and told me to talk to his macinic.after a few min on hold, the macinic came on the phone and tried to tell the same thing.after I asked him the same question he agreed that the first chamber an air filter were clean along with my CVT. He then tried to tell me it was condensation and that it was normal.i then said,if that was the case then that still doesn't explain the dirt and sand that got in there!he then tried to tell me that it was normal for some dirt to pass the filter."he thinks I'm stupid"I said if that was the case then the first chamber an air filter should have dirt on them.which they don't.as you seen in the photos. He then said the only thing he could do is to take the air box right off and fill it with water to see if it leaks.i stopped him and said, you didn't do that? He said no and that it was a lot of work to take it out.he then said if He doesnt find anything, then how am I going to get paid.i said that's not my problem and that there is clearly a problem.he told me that maybe he's missing something and that he's going to take the pressure washer to it. I told him, he needs to take it right out of the machine as there might be a hairline crack or a bolt through somewhere he can't see.he said he would try the pressure washer first an the speak to his manager. I can't be leave this is happening and want to get BRP involved now!!! What should I do???

For real, if that dealer is going to do the blame game, go to another dealer....BRP will warranty stuff depending on the dealer and how the tech words it when they do a warranty claim......dealer will absolutely make or break your experience with owning a Can Am.....tell the tech to do a smoke test on the airbox that way it will show if there is a hole or crack in it, which there is, IMO.

I would definitely start looking for another dealer. If they give you your machine back as is without an honest attempt at finding where the dirt is coming from get a second opinion right away. You don't want to risk losing an engine, it will only add to the stress and complication of the problem.
