Clicking sound from primary sheave

I have a very loud clicking sound coming from my primary sheave. I took the cover off to try to find out what is going on and cant figure it out. The sound is coming from the primary and only at idle or low rpm's. When the belt ramps up the sound goes away. When the primary sheave is pulled off (the fixed, engine side left on) the sound goes away. Everything is clean, the weights are free and have no excess slack. The rollers on the govenor? cover (the part that fits over the weights) are all turning freely. The bearings in the one way bearing are both turning freely. I am at a loss what it could be. Its very loud and very noticable.

Any ideas?

Mine makes a similar noise, but not nearly as loud. Do any of the finger weights look like they are being battered because it sounds to me like one of them are bouncing back and forth. Just a thought. :2cent:

neuromax.. have you taken the clutch apart and possibly forgotten some of the washers between the clutch fingers? Also, is the clutch just as loud with the belt on? They all make some noise similar to this, but not quite as bad. So there should be a bit of play in there but not that much. I also wonder if it gets quiet with the belt on.. I would say put the belt back on and then we can tell ya if ours sound the same with the belt on.

No slack would mean that they are in a bind. Some slack is required, but not a whole bunch. I just looked in the manual and there isn't a "side to side" play spec - which means it isn't closely monitored which means that it could be why some dealers say not to worry about it. Like you, I would find it very annoying.

If you do find a lot of slack, it might be worth seeing if there is enough room to put a shim in there - maybe an o-ring or something small enough to take up some slack, but not all of it. If the noise is gone, you'll have found the source.

Lot of "possibilities" in this thought.

Good thought fmj but no, I did the clutch kit which replaced 3 of the fingers more than a year ago and this is a recent problem. Its not quite as loud but close with the belt and the cover on. Its no louder or quieter with just the belt on, sounds just the same.

OSO, Sorry but I don't know which parts you are talking about. If you mean the part that has the small two spring loaded pins. It has grease on that part, not sure if its enough or not. I didn't realize it was set up to ratchet anywhere in that area. Thats possible............is that what you are talking about?

They don't actually ratchet unless there is some resistance to rotation for the sleeve - IE, when the belt is on and at idle, the belt makes contact with the center sleeve only and the secondary pulley - thus, the belt drags on the sleeve which in turn causes the pins to ratchet. With no belt, this can't happen..... at least in my understanding of how it works.

the isoflex grease is what goes in there. Not something youc an get off the shelf anywhere, and its spendy too. Somebody had recommended using Brake caliper grease since its pretty temp resisitant. Feel like being a guinea pig? otherwise, you would have to get your hands on some of the isoflex, or just use regular grease. the wrong grease is better than no grease at all..

Dealer order only as far as I can tell - unless you have abuddy that has already ordered some froma dealer.

When I wanted some, I figured for sure the dealership would have some on a shelf and just spot me a "dab" as a "dab" is all you need as they service the Outlanders, right? They had never heard of it and I had to give them the part number for it. I should have known then that their service department wasn't up to speed.

I sent Neuromax a pm with the thread that outlines what this stuff is and where to get it earlier today. He should be on the right track now.
