Hauling: Backward or Forward?

Hi, All,

I've always hauled my ATVs on my trailer facing forward. Today, however, I was planning to finally install an Erickson E-Fitting wheel chock and strap kit I had purchased last year. I pulled the Outlander Max 800R onto the trailer forward and set the chocks in place at the rear wheels near the back of the trailer to see where their final placement.

It occurred to me that the chocks might be a little hard to work around since I use the trailer for hauling other things (lumber, etc.). If put the chocks in toward the front of the trailer and towed the ATV backward, they would be more out of the way for other trailer use.

Turning the machine around would reduce tongue weight, but the engine would still be in front of the axle. I would pop the windshield off (open trailer) and cover or plug the exhaust pipe.

Before I commit to the actual chock mounting, I thought I'd get your feedback on forward or backward hauling: six of one, half dozen issue? (I know some won't like the chock system, so I'm prepared to hear that as well.:)

Thanks!

I've always hauled mine forward..... it just makes the most sense to me. I don't think you're changing tongue weight all that much, just based on the location of the engine/gearbox in the chassis.

Flipping it around backwards starts to introduce all kinds of high-pressure air up under seats and fenders etc., that never intended to see it.

Thanks for your replies.

I had already decided to stay with the forward haul mode and chock the front wheels as DaleD mentioned. The chock manufacturer's instructions say to chock the rear wheels, but with the brakes on, it should be fine. My brother chocked his front wheels as well and has had no issues.

As for air pressure issues, there are workarounds (tarping, windshield removal, etc.). But I had decided it would be more hassle each time than it is worth. The purpose of the Erickson chock system is security, simplicity, and speed. All the counter measures would cancel out the last two of those.

Thanks again.
