Hello all, So yesterday I sold my 07 Grizzly 700:crying... I did lots to make it how I liked it and I did like it. But now I start a new chapter in my life. I will need a 2up machine and I am drawn toward the XMR but I have been told more than once that it is not a trail rig. I ride hard, fast almost all trails not much mud. I have spent much time trying to figure out which machine is best suited for me and it seems to come back to the XT-P, but I still want the XMR..... Can someone please enlighten me as to why the xmr isn't a good trail rig? Thanks!

Seriously if you are more worried about looking cool, then get the XMR and suffer with its trail abilities.
Otherwise, if you are serious about a trail performing machine, buy the XTP and enjoy the ride, handling, performance, comfort etc.

They will both do the job, but as they say "the right tool for the job is the key"!

The XMR has horrible shock travel, so they ride like bricks in comparison to the XTP. Your passenger will be VERY happy you selected the XTP because it will ride soooooo much smoother! You say you don't ride much mud, so I would forget the XMR for that very reason.

In the end its your money, so buy what you like. I've shared my opinions, so take them for what they are worth…. :)

Either way, get the 1,000cc and don't look back!

so it really is like that? Not good trail rig... I guess the XT-P is where it's at. Thank you for your view. Sooo now the question is engine size... 1000 or 850? I was riding 2up on a 45hp Grizzly....

Go with as big as you can afford no such thing as unused power if you ride hard, buy the 850 within a year you will be wanting more power. I bought a 800 thinking that was plenty it was for 6 months then I wished I had more wrecked the 800 bought a 1000 & have been adding to it ever since. Like DEADMAN said buy the XTP much better shocks & ride. What ever you decide you will be smiling when you pin the throttle.:aniwheeler6:

You know, when you say you ride balls to the wall 100% of the time at WOT, but in reality, the HP is more about testosterone count instead of what is actually used or needed.

I figured on the 1000 but wasn't sure if I could get away with a 850. No one can answer that for me... I guess I should do the 1000 then I won't have to wonder.

Coming off the grizz 700 the 850 will knock your socks off,the ride and agility compared to the grizz will be more than inspiring. I too come off of a yammy and although they were good machines, totaly different game,no comparison ... I think the 850 will do all you want and more...The other machine is all mud and you want to rip the trails and ride 2-up now and again,so no choice to make...jmo

I've been adding power-adders to my 1,000 because the 1,000 wasn't enough for me. I'd be really hating myself If I had bought a smaller engine.

Everyone with an 800 or 850 will act like theres no need for more, but every time they trade, they trade up to the big motor! :) It costs much less to buy the 1,000 now than it does to trade up to it in a couple years.

The new 850's not a lot short of the 1,000, but its some. Remember, you are buying the 2 up long heavy chassis, that alone needs more power to make it move!

I am getting real close to pulling the trigger on this baby... We had a bad wind/rain storm here this weekend and lots of power outages (dealership closed due to no power). As soon as today I will see about making this reality! I will get the 1K for sure.
I ride hard and fast. The Grizz probably made it feel like I was going faster than I was due to it's age and lack of power and suspension...When riding the Grizz I was almost always right to the bar with the throttle ( she was under powered). Really looking forward to getting my new wheeler. I honestly have to question my sanity for considering spending approx 16K on a wheeler! This is for sure a splurge for me, excited about it tho.

Good. Get what makes you happy. A lot of the power useage depends on where you ride. Many places if you ride balls up you will find yourself wrapped around a tree. Others that ride so called trails in Arizona are really just dusty dirt roads, and you can do what you want there. I tend to ride non-aggressively and like to smell the roses and take in the scenery as I pass through an area. Saves fuel and don't break parts. But that's me.

Don't get me wrong, I do ride at a fast pace. We generally ride as fast as trail and conditions warrant. It will really be a treat to ride a truly nice machine for once. The Grizzly always got me back home (never left me in the woods), it's just how it did it.... I'm excited about getting this new machine.

Comparably, it is a Cadillac. Other quads will bounce you off the machine when you run over a pot hole. This machine gives the feeling that you may have run over a pine cone.

don't make the mistake of buying something that looks cool and will not do the job you want it to do. The XMR is a mud bike only it was not intended to be a trail bike. The XTP 2up is want you want and nothing else. The XMR has a lot of features that are not trail friendly. first are the tires they will rattle your teeth loose after a few hour ride on them and the stiff shox will add to it and so will the lower gearing, after 1 hour on the trail you will have a 15,000 dollar sever case of buyers remorse. Get the xtp, power steering and and the adjustable shox are a must. Engine size depends on your ability. i can see the experienced riders saying to get the 1000 and I'm a power junkie as well but its not for everyone. for example the 700 your coming off is equivalent to a 500 can am rotax motor and is really as much as most people need. but if you want bigger that new 850 is no slouch and a great motor but if money and experience is no problem the 1000 is the ticket. Your passenger will greatly appreciate you getting the XTP over the XMR too.

I trail ride my XMR about 90% of the time and it does great! But I also don't ride more than 20mph because you can't were I ride unless you want to be against a tree! ....So the answer to your question is....Can an XMR trail ride, yes!, but because you ride FAST, I'd get the XTP for that reason alone...

I just recently sold my 2012 XMX 800 and purchased a 2017 XMR 1000.. I love the bike more, torque than the 800 I also think the suspension is a little softer. I ride mostly trails in central Florida.. it’s deep sand and mud very few open smooth trails in the area I ride.
This 1000 is heavy and it burns a lot of gas. It will go through anything you put it in. But it is not a fast trail riding bike You are not going to sling it around like some of the other quads. Will it ride trails? absolutely. But if my buddies want to ride really fast I let them go first.. Torque breaks things horsepower makes them go fast.. I very seldom ever go over 40 mph and ride in low 95% of the time.
It’s a great bike but if you are chasing other trail quads I would look at the XT...

Why are you in low 95% of the time? In sand and such, you need wheel speed. I know because on St. Lawrence Island before freeze up, you have to keep the wheels spinning to keep up forward momentum. You are shortening the life of your engine.

The XMR tires just want to dig holes and they pull so hard that I can see low range working best.
I've got aftermarket clutches and I still run my 1000 XXC in Low in headlight DEEP snow simply because theres so much less risk of belt slippage. It runs 40-45mph in low before it starts to spike the rpm's! I can run it by my ears as the Muzzy makes it real obvious if the RPM's are climbing above 7,400!

I'v decided that the XMR isn't the rid for me. I'll be getting the XT-P Max (gotta think of the better half). Really looking forward to it.
