Went out and started my 1000XT today just to let her run for awhile and noticed there was a message that said "limp home mode" on my screen? Anybody know what this mode means and how or what caused it to go into this mode? I havent even rode it for the past month or so. Its just been sitting on its trailer underneath a cover?

Thanks,
Luke

Dont think its been overheating cause I havent been driving it but with the cold temps I wonder if the battery voltage your talking bout is the problem. How would one go bout checking that and fixing it?

Looked up what the "limp home mode" ment in the owners manual and all it said was to take it to a dealer. Isnt any dealers in town here and the nearest is bout 1 1/2 hours away so if I can save a trip I would rather.

Put your battery on a charge or leave the bike idling for a while. If the LIMP HOME MODE is still displaying it's not a low battery issue.

does the g2 have the 'diagnostic mode" like the first gen bikes? If so the bike will display the trouble code.
1. turn key to lights on position
2. use mode button and scroll to engine hour (EH) on gauge
3. press and HOLD the mode button while quickly toggling between high and low beam ( min 3 toggles in 2 seconds)
4. If there is any P-CODES they will be displayed
5. post the code and we can tell you what it means

well I went out started it and let it run for bout 10 mins shut it off let all the lights turn off then turned it back on and it still says its in "limp home mode"

So I did the little thing to figure out if it was throwin any codes and this is what code came up...

0 P0524

Anyone knows what this code means or how I can figure out what it means?

P0524 is not listed in my service manual, however I only have the manual for the first gen bikes (up to 2011). Someone with the g2 manual will be able to look the code up

P-codes are OBD II codes and P0524 means Engine Oil Pressure Too Low.

I listed all codes in a seperate thread.

Its got whatever oil comes with them from the dealer I havent had it long enough that I've had to change the oil yet. It could very well be low on oil though I'll have to check that out in the morning.

Again thanks for all the help guys. You guys are saving me a trip to the dealer and some $$$.

I was actually burning a tiny bit of oil with the stock oil, and mine was 3/4 of a mark low when I checked it after like... 6 hours I think it was.. Don't go over 10 hours before you get that mineral break in oil outta there.

I now run thicker oil and haven't had an issue, I've put 16 hours on the bike since and the oil mark hasn't moved.

well mine did the same thing one month ago, started it to let it warm up! and notice limp home mode, brougth it to the dealer and there was 2 updates they had to do because when it was cold the ecu picked up a bad signal from oil pressure sender not showing oil pressure building up!!! the guy told me that it should of been done at the factory but was not. and it always idle funny when i started it after they did the updates, all good like night and day , so check with your dealer, its not a voltage problem or electrical!!!!! hope this helps good luck

my understanding is that commanders will go into limp mode when it needs mandatory servicing by the dealer usually at 1k miles, so it has to go to dealer

Cold machine with cold, thick oil can do this, especially if you happen to goose the throttle right after startup over 2000 rpm before enough oil pressure built up ....the ECU can determine if you are revving the engine before oil is thin enough to lubricate properly ....

If it happens to you again, keep engine at lower rpm levels while putting around to COMPLETELY get oil hot, then take engine over 4000 rpm for like 10 seconds or more and the limp home mode should clear by itself.....no worrys.....happened to about all of us in one fashion or another

I know tons of guys with new can ams and old. The bikes never go into limp mode from not having service on time. What they do is displey a message at start up saying "maitanence soon" but the bike still performs at 100%.

Yeap ... my 1000 say's "maintenance required", as I do my own and don't have a computer to get rid of this :th_smiliepissed: message! I hate this, but she is still running at 100%.

hey so ive been reading this thread and i just wanted to clear up a few things, commanders have a bigger oil system now. first of all they added an oil cooler so it takes a second to register oil pressure therefore the check engine light will illuminate for a second at start up particularly when cold, not an issue. the ecm update doesnt seem to have much of an effect from what ive seen but its still nothing to worry about. secondly the maintenance req'd message automatically pops up every 50 hours, whether you like it or not, no big deal. and last i know of a way to reset that stupid maint. light all by yourself, if anybodys paying attention ill be back with the procedure:th_smiliedance: to help with the problem at hand limp home mode will stay on constant only if there is a hard set issue in the ecm, best thing to do would be to have a dealer check the code and at least give you a p-code number. with a p-code i could better help you.

Well finally got my oil and filters and got the oil and filter changed after that I started it and it still said it was in limp home mode. Decided Id try what somebody said to try early which was go and putt around to warm up the oil. Sure enough only after a couple mins the limp home mode went off and havent seen it since! Just wanted to say thanks to everyone that answered my quesitons.

TraxterGuy....Id be intersted in knowing how to reset the maintence required message if you would.

#29 ·
You have to take it to the dealer to get the maintenance soon message cleared.

i dont believe this works for the outlanders but it works for the commanders fine.
Maintenance Message
MY 2012 SSV's come from the factory with the
maintenance message scrolling across the cluster.
BUDS will not remove that message. Here is a way to
remove it.

communicate this information to your customer.
1. ECM must be completely powered down.
2. Transmission in PARK.
3. Turn the ignition Switch ON.

Now the following steps must be done in this order in 4

1. Press the Override Button.
2. Press the Brake Pedal.
3. Release the Brake Pedal.
4. Release the Override Button.
5. Press the Brake Pedal.
6. Release the Brake Pedal.
7. Press the Override Button.
8. Press the Brake Pedal.
9. Release the Brake Pedal
.

10. Release the Override Button.
11. Turn ignition switch to OFF and allow to power all
the way down.
NOTE: After turning the ignition switch to OFF, the
electrical system stays ON for a moment. Wait till it is
completely off.
Next time the ignition switch is turned on the
maintenance message will not be displayed.
NOTE: In the event the maintenance required message
