I pulled my air filter out for my 2013 Outlander 1000's 500 mile maintenance and it's in desperate need of replacement since I ride in very dusty areas. Since I've had very good luck with them in the past (never off road usage... except in my aircraft ;) ), I bought a K&N filter before reading all the bad reviews and am not sure I want to put it in. Should I just toss/sell this new in box K&N air filter and run down to the local dealership to get a new $50 air filter or should I get something different.

Take the k&n back! You can get a replacement filter if you want. Im running a uni foam filter I got it for like 35 shipped to my door.

It's too late to get a new filter by the weekend and I don't want to put this oily and dirty filter back in the way it is. Will cleaning the air filter work for a weekend or do I risk problems if I try to clean in. I've never cleaned paper filters, I've always replaced them. They usually don't cost $50 and only last 500 miles though. :)

2013 Outlander FOAM SLEEVE over paper Air Filter

I also have a 2013 outlander 650. You don't mention, but didn't yours come with an oilable FOAM SLEEVE over the paper filter ? Mine did.

Although its NOT OILED when the machine comes NEW, somewhere in the FINE PRINT it tells the owner to Oil the sleeve before heading out. Can't you slide the foam off and do the usual wash/clean and put it back on for this one weekend ?

I have 600 miles on my Outy with the OEM filter & sleeve. I just got the new UNI Filter NU-8708ST AirFilter ($27.95 shipped) and that will be going on sometime in the Spring when I get tired of washing out the CAN AM OEM 'sleeve".

I assume when you say reoil you mean the foam prefilter only? I'll get another filter on order. Is there much difference between the uni and the twin air filter?

Your not supposed to but you can blow it out using air(prob 40psi should work) then just wash your foam outer part and re oil it. How far do you plan on riding? also is it gonna be really dusty?

EDIT not really any difference. Some guys like uni and others like twin. Its up to you. I got my uni cause it was a decent deal and would of been here in 2 or 3 days.

I'm going to the sand dunes this weekend. Not as much dust as other places I ride. Plenty of sand though. :D

I've found the uni for a lot cheaper than the twin-air. Unless the twin-air is twice as good I think I'll go with the uni.

Why cant you blow out the filter? Ive washed my foam pre filter a few times in soapy water, blew out the paper one with a compressor and both parts still look like new. My foam filter has been almost black from dust and the paper barely let a puff of dust out when hit with the compressor.

You're not supposed to because they say it can separate/weaken the fibers. Same thing with vehicle air filters. You are prob fine if you do it once or twice with low psi air.

Makes sense. Ppl w/o common sense should prob not use a compressor for anything! Ha.

Just clean and re-oil the foam predicted. That's what I do. Then use an air compressor to spray the dust out of the paper filter. I see you have an aircraft, what kind do you have? I have an aircraft of my own (2 actually) :)

Well, instead of riding this week I ended up flying out to pick up my new ram 1500. I have an Uni on the way for next weekend's ride.

I don't have an aircraft right now (not counting R/C), but I used to have a powered parachute powered by a Rotax 582 and a clipped wing Challenger 2 with a similar engine. Between my ATV and work I haven't had the time and dedication it takes to own an aircraft. I'm sure I'll have one again eventually. Both of my aircraft had dual bing carbs and a K&N filter.

Ahhhh I gotcha! I have a 2008 Diamond DA40 and a 2011 Diamond DA20. I know what you mean about not having time to fly. I bought my DA40 with 638 hours on the clock and it only has 638.3 now haha! I've been flying my flight schools Cessna for now because the weather here where I live isn't very good. So both my planes are basically hanger beauties:th_smiliefrustrated The DA20 has about 138 hours on it, but I also bought that with 135 or so hours on it. Had to fly it home from the Diamond dealer I bought it from. All in all, I have about 500+ hours of VFR time in a Cessna 172 and a both 300 hours of IFR time in a Cessna 182. Sorry to take away from your thread with my rant. PM me if you want to talk aircraft:th_smiliewavey:

I was told from Kevin at Get torqued that because of the K&N restrictive elbo they actually lose HP. Trust his apion as he has an ATV Dyno. He said use stock or Uni/Twin air

I do not know what years of bike you are talking about but this was brought up 3 years ago. That is why the stock filter was to have more HP than the TA or UNI. The TA and Uni had an elbow and the stock filter was a straight down flow. But when I questioned the persons that did the Dyno test at that time they did admit that they were not oiling the pre filter on the stock. They used it as it came from CA. So that would not have been a fair test.
