As the title says...looking for a machine for the wife. Found an 03 500 Traxter 500 for a decent price. What are the pluses and minuses for this rig? Any huge bad inherent problems? What to look for?

Thanks gang!

is that the step through design? i think it is.

I always picture people falling out the side of those things , if she will just be putt putting around and its a good price i say why not.As far as styling goes there herendous (IMO).

What's a good deal? $ - km - hours ?

This is a great machine because of the low spot infront of the seat to get your leg through and that the rad is in the rear, clear of stick and stones. Also having the rad in the back keeps the heat off the rider. Since there is no rad in the front it has a huge water tight storage compartment under the front rack. It is a real work horse.

HOWEVER the front wheels are engaged all the time which makes for hard turning at low speeds.

This is my wifes machine a 2005 John Deere...same as a traxster.

Besides the obvious, there's the mechanical background to take into account.

It's OK, if you don't have high expectations. But don't let your wife ride an Outlander. She won't want back on the traxter... ever.
I think that cat is already out of the bag...but at least she won't be getting yours stuck in the dark anymore Dave!:)

Hehehe...somebody remembers that story! Well...she HAS ridden the Outty. She keeps digging up these used ones on the internet and phoning me or emailing me at work, "how about this one?" But she being cheap. I keep telling her, "you won't be happy". She dug up two ads for Traxter500's, so I thought I'd ask. I think I'll stay away. I'd really like a 08 or 09 400 EFI.....but the budget might be abi tight with this economy....

I would insist she waits and gets an outty. We all know our wives have good intentions BUT they don't think everything through. I ride with a friend on a traxter and its not bad, but it beats him up pretty good. Solid rear axle. If your wife gets one she will stop riding or ride yours more.

The traxter is more of a utility atv than most any other atv out there. It is very tough. They will do 60 mph. My father has a 04. I really like it. But as earlier posts state it isn't the most comfy ride on really rough trails. One final note the JD pictured above is camparible to a Bomby Quest, not a Traxter. Good luck on whatever you buy.

I rode with a guy that has "6" of the John Deere/BRP, Traxter/Quests.

Don't know why in the heck you would need that many of the same Quad, but he's a John Deere collector.

I do remember they did handle like a Tractor, but i liked having the radiator and fan in the rear of the quad. But i do know the wife won't like riding it after riding the Outy.

Most women i know have a hard time getting off the outy and back on a straight rear axle( especially a Honda).

I am finding a few holdover 08 400 Outty EFI's for a decent price.....in fact, NBM may be hooking me up. Non XT model....I'll stick the take-off wheels and tires from my XT on hers and it'll be beauty!

We used to have a 02 Traxter that we bought used and it was an "OK" unit untill the engine blow, and of course the engine and trans is all one and it damaged almost everything in the trans as well. What actually happened was the crank bearing failed and that bearing is not available seperataly from BRP, you have to buy the complete crankshaft assy with the connecting rod and brg installed for $1500.00 !!!!! after some home work I found out that BRP now has a reman crank assy available for $500.00 exchange. After adding up all the parts needed to rebuild this eng/trans assy, it came to over $3500.00 parts along, that's to labor. I was going to over it myself, but ended up giving it in trade for our new Outty. Oh well it's just one of those things that happen in life.

Some time after I had made the deal, I talked to the tech at the dealership that overhauled it and the bill had come to over $5000.00 buy the time the dust settled.

That's a lot of money spent on an older quad, IMO.

Okay machine

I bought an old 650 trail buck ext 2005-6? (same as the traxter I think) got it from an uncle. We had to put some longer shocks and springs on it as well as some larger tires, but it is a great machine it keeps up with my new 650 CanAm and is better in some areas Actualy seems to climb better and stays in control when comming out of a deep whole better. As for the steering while it is not power steering it seems to be okay. I think the 4 wheel system only goes to 4x4 when required the rest of the time it is in two. I use this thing hunting because of the tilt box and my 14 year old son uses it when we go out for a family ride. My only kick is that it is longer and is quite heavy. For my 2 cents this thing is a monster and I would not hesitate to buy one.
