recommendations for timing chain and guides please

With my 04 Outlander 400 Max having about 14,000 kms (8750 miles) I'm thinking it's time to replace the cam timing chain and guides. Any recommendations as to the best aftermarket brands and their quality? Dealer price for the chain is $83 and guides are $21 and $10. Also thinking about replacing the chain tension unit. It appears it is not sold by the dealer as a unit (it doesn't show on the parts list) so would have to buy the individual parts, costing $53..... everything before 12% tax is added on, coming to about $190 total with the tax. At these prices, is it worth getting aftermarket, and if so, what brands are top quality?

I know it's best to buy OEM, but extra cash isn't always available. Your thoughts and suggestions please.

Definitely not. The hassle of having to open up the engine again to replace any aftermarket part that won't last as long as the OEM ones will negate the savings.
Go with OEM for the peace of mind it provides and be done with it. Pay one, cry once.

lol, thanks @hillsdweller, but I'm with @xsever here.... to me, @northern pointer, that's not nearly enough $$ to even consider going other than OEM. That's just part of the ownership expense, imo.

Have you priced say from partzilla? They seem to have the best prices on OEM BRP online

Thanks. I've checked out Partzilla and their prices are definitely a little lower but I presume they're in American dollars. Once converted to Canadian dollars due to the exchange rate, the parts would cost the same or more than the standard prices you see on other can am sites. I don't know if Partzilla has a Canadian branch to order from. I'll have to do some more research on the company. Does anyone know if Partzilla has a Canadian branch to order from?

So.....I researched and no, Partzilla does not have a Canadian branch. So unfortunate. They will ship internationally, but as I stated before, once shipping and dollar exchange rates apply, the parts would cost more than here.

As for the mileage on my atv, at about 14,000kms or 8750 miles, is it time that I should change the cam timing chain and related components? I don't ride hard, just ride trails so the machine is never under heavy pressure to run hard. What have other owners of the same atv have had to do? Due to its age, my atv is making some noise, but is not showing any issues.

That's quite an impressive number on the ole thing, speaks to its robustness (is that even a word?)

My gut answer is to say yes, change the timing chain as part of "preventative maintenance", but the service manual should have an allowable tolerance for chain deflection. If yours passes the test, who are we to say change it?

Thanks BombardierBomb, but I have no idea how to test for chain tolerance. As it is, the plunger on the chain tensioner does have a fair number of threads already showing as it pushes against the chain. That's why I'm considering replacing these parts and feeling uncomfortable not doing so.

I would definitely get OEM parts for internal engine parts and i believe they have been updated to stronger ones a few years ago. partzilla i don't feel has good deals on any oems parts. check out rocky mountain atvs/mc. there Oem can am parts are usually the cheapest you'll find at 30% off MSRP and free shipping. i would also check with cam am parts guy.
