Turning radius & trail riding

Hello to all. I'm looking at getting a new Outty 650 XT, and considering the Max version. So I have a few questions.

I'm mostly into trail riding with the wife aboard and maybe some light mud. Occasionally I get into a few tight areas.

Does that extra 8" (on the Outty!) make much difference on turning radius and handling? I have ridden the 650 XT but have not had the chance to ride the XT Max. Is the ride quality any different between the two?

Thanks in advance for any info.

hi there i have the max and if you plan on 2 up riding its worth it to get the max . it is very stable and you can out climb a single seater if your alone on your max. but saying all this for safety reasons get the max just because you said you do alot of 2 up riding and single seaters arnt ment for to people and you allways see someone going over backwards trying to double,

I appreciate the info.

Does the Max turn reasonably close to the one seater, as in a fairly tight trail with trees?

In everyone's opion, do you think that the 650 XT Max could run 27" Mudlites without too much trouble? Or 28" Mudlites at the very most, for me anyway.

Thanks

I have the 800 max and there is only one trail or two that I have to back up to get around the corner, and these are TIGHT corners, with trees tight on both sides . I have not ridden the regular Outty, but in my opinion the ride on the Max is exceptional, and hill climbing with that extra length is great. Extremely stable platform, never got the willies on a hill, like should I bail or not. I ride some really steep hills at times, just to show off the power to some of the sport guys and other ute riders. Two weeks ago someone in our group on a 800 Polaris tried one big, steephill that I rip up, and got stuck halfway up. Didn't flip, but I heard he had to empty his drawers when they finally got his PoPo down again. :ban:

90, I have a 650XT, my Dad has a 800 Max Ltd. both are super, great, awesome machines...The deal with the turning radius is a non-issue, I find when I get into a tight spot on the Max, a very small tap of the throttle will bring the rear end right around, if you ride in semi-sandy soil, this is even easier.

As far as the tires go, I ride at Windrock and ALOT of folks there run pluglites, er I mean Mud-Lites...the Bombs have no trouble turning 27's. I don't have any first hand knowledge of any wheel bearing failures because of the tires either. Good Luck.

I have an 800 Max.

Only time I missed a turn, everyone else missed it too, and had to back up.

The stability, because of the extra wheelbase far outweighs the tiny loss of turning radius.

When your wife rides with you she will be comfortable infinetely more comfortable than on any backseat rig available for a regular quad. And you will be more comfortable, and confident too, the Outlander Max with two people rides just as good as any quad with one.

The 800 turns 27 inch Bighorns just fine. Lost some of the jackrabbit acceleration and a little top end, but the Outlander is so strong it didn't hurt anything.

the max rides way better than the non max. I thought my old polaris rode smother over rough ground than my non max but I rode and just bought a max after riding another guys and it is the best riding quad ever imo.

I also have a max, I have riden the single seats but not much. In our group I ride with there are several more max 800's and a few single seats. I have found that the max does ride a bit better than the single seaters and I really do not notice any difference in the turning radius, the max does feel a little heavier on the steering. If you are going to be riding 2up or doing hill climbs I would highly recommend the max over the single seat. The stabilty is a lot greater on the max and like Kevin said, every tight area I have found that I had to back up on the single seat quads were having to do the same. I have had a lot of people comment about how I get that thing through the trails but it is very surprising how nimble the machine is for it's size. Another thing to think about is many places will not allow you to ride 2up unless the machine was designed for it. The box with the seat built in is not good enough for many of the legal trail systems.

Hey there clone man,I have an 800 max too and I agree with O-D. The tires that come on the xt are probably some of the best all around trail tire out there.I run 26' Bighorns myself but they dont ride as smooth as the stockers IMO. Shop around and read this forum, no better place to get info on Outlanders than here. Good luck on whatever you decide to buy.

Okay guys, I believe you have pretty much convinced me to go ahead and get the Max. I appreciate all the good information.

But now I'm starting to have second thoughts on which one I want, the 650 or the 800!!!

The buddies that I've been riding with have Honda Rincons, Kawi 750s, 450 Grizzly's and stuff like that.

Do you think that the 650 XT Max can pretty much keep up with these guys? Let me set one thing straight, I'm not into all out flying. I have a '06 Honda Rancher 350 and have never opened it up for the top end, and don't care much to do so. For the most part of the time, I have my 6 yr old riding with me. But when "squirt" on them a little bit, the little 350 doesn't do too well with the bigger ones.

No one around my area that I've been riding with has a Outty, so that's one of the reasons I'm looking at it, because it is different.

Is there much of difference in price between the 650 and 800?

Thanks.

It is about $700 difference between the 800 and 650. If you are not into flying you can save the $700 and invest that in other goodies. The OL650 in power is only second to the OL800 of all the quads including the brutes, you will have no trouble keeping up with the other guys. IMO the 500 on the trails would not have a problem keeping up with the big kawis in your group on the trail. The kawi's do not handle as well and I have found it tough to get away from other big bores on the trails on my 800 unless there is room to open it up.

Sorry to make your choices harder but you may also consider the OL500 max since you said you are not into the power and have never even opened the 350 up to top end. The other bikes will not get away from you on the trails and it will save you quite a bit of money and it even has plenty of power to turn those tires. The 500 is also a fuel injected V-twin but has the struts on front while the 650's and 800's have the duel A arms. We drag raced on asphalt a OL500 against a SP700EFI and they were dead locked from start to finish.

I have both Max and standard 400 and I find that in the really tight woods trails in the treeswhereI frequently ride, there are times that I can't make it through with the Max. Particularly when it is a tight corner and thefootrest is rubbingon the inside tree and no way to back up and gain radius. Goosing the tail around at a time like that is not a good idea, especially in 4WD,or you'll eat the tree in front. Even the standard Outty has a tough time of it when I try to keepup withmy friend'sPo 500 on these trails. When I know that we are going to be in really tight stuff that is the time that I choose to use the old 300 Cat cause it's turning radius will beat almost anything out there and it really snakes through the trees. The Outties don't have as good throttle response either and tend to be a bit jumpy in slow tough going. Wife loves riding double on the Max and would ratherI driveit, ratherthanrun the standard Outty I bought for her.

You need to change your sig jeff! Congrats in the new quad! About time you figured out what the best color was hehehe!

Now who wants to be like who :tg:
I will change sig when I get a new pic. Dont want to confuse people to much on here anyway.LOL

Geo is right I traded my 06 red outty 800 today for a brand spanking new 07 800 max xt. Just went for a little spin tonight it has 2.2 miles on it right now. Who says the max won't wheelie ? It won't wheelie in high like the 1 up did but it will get them off the ground. put her in low and you can count the stars wooooooo hoooooo !

I did get yeller.

With a 650 you will be able to run with them no issues you will smoke everyone but possibly the 750 brutes. I love our max I will take it in the same places everyone else goes.

90, Short answer: The 650 XT Max will have absolutely no trouble keeping up with and passing your riding buddies, the ride is better on the Max than the single seater. Yellow is the "faster" color and take the extra $700 and invest in a good set of 25" or 26" Bighorns and some pretty wheels. End of story, you're good to go...:)

Hey, I appreciate all the input. You guys have posted alot of good info for me.

Now, I've just got to figure out which color I want! I'm leaning towards Camo due to less likely to see the scratches. A buddy has a Camo Honda Rincon that is older than mine and you can't see the scratches on his and mine looks a lot older than his. And I take pretty good care of my stuff.

Thank you

Camo is good, but yellow is fastest!!!:tg:

The 650 will keep up or do better. With the moolah you save, skid plates first, then steering stabilizer. According to WVBartman, you will ride away from the other quads with the Precision RP stabilizer, especially on rough trails, and you'll do it in comfort.
