Walrus, close but just 1 thing, the cam turns 1/2 the speed of the crank in the 4 strokes. so the cam gear marks will only be parallel to the head at the right TDC

Looking down into the hole where you removed the crankshaft position sensor you should a number 1. There is a 50 % chance you won't see it. Remember the 4 stroke. If you don't see it, cycle the timing gear another revolution. 360 degrees.

this is being way over thought

you can use the cam gear position only to set valves, the reason can am has you use the crank position sensor is simple, to verify timing while your in there
thats it

this is the most simple machine to set valves on, like I said in an earilier post, there is close to a 30 degree window that they can be set in, and motor does not have to be at tdc, it can be on the bottom coming up on a compression stroke
